The post offered is that of Inpatient Consultant in General Adult Psychiatry covering the Milton Keynes locality and is based in Hazel Ward, Campbell Centre, Milton Keynes Hospital Campus, Eaglestone, Milton Keynes, MK6 5NG.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated and dynamic individual to provide high quality care to patients with acute and chronic psychiatric conditions, ensuring that assessment of interventions are provided in a sensitive, accessible and culturally appropriate way.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work in collaboration with the matron, ward manager, nurses and other members of the MDT to constantly ensure high quality care is delivered. Attendance at daily Safety Huddles and Weekly Bed Management meetings are core elements of this role to ensure the flow of patients is good and the provision of care is safe and effective. The Consultant will lead on quality improvement initiativesand work with the team to implement new ways of working to benefit the patient.

The post is based on the hospital campus at Milton Keynes University Hospital and there is office space and administration support for this post. There is a large faculty of consultants across mental health and a comprehensive program of professional development to which the successful candidate will have access. A personal budget for CPD is allocated to each consultant annually. There is also access to apply for CEA awards.

As a new consultant in the team you will be offered a place on the Management and Leadership Course run by the Trust, in conjunction with Imperial College. The Trust also has a partnership with the Institute of Healthcare Improvement (IHI), giving you the opportunity to gain knowledge in improvement science and enhance your skills and confidence to understand healthcare systems and successfully implement change.

This role is based within Hazel ward; the male ward. A significant proportion of admissions are for a short stay for patients who have a range of mental presentations including psychosis, personality disorder andmood disorders. The team, led by the Consultant, offers a comprehensive assessment and treatment package of person-centred care to all patients. Bi-weekly ward rounds allow for care plans to be monitored and close collaboration with patients, families and carers focusing on recovery. The team work towards facilitating timely discharge from hospital by working closely with colleagues in the Crisis Resolution Team and community services.

Person Specification Qualifications Essential
  • MB BS or equivalent medical qualification.
  • Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment.
  • Included on the GMC Specialist Register OR within six months
  • Approved clinician status
  • Approved under S12
  • Excellent knowledge in acute care with an interest in working with males presenting with complex mental health disorders
  • ?Makes decisions based on evidence and experience including the contribution of others
Desirable
  • Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management
  • CCT accreditation in either CAMHS or Learning Disabilities or within six months of achieving CCT
  • Additional clinical qualifications.
  • Able to plan and deliver undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training relevant to this post
  • Has led clinical audits leading to service change.
