Highview and Aberdeen Park are 24hr staffed, mixed community rehabilitation units situated in the London Borough of Islington. The units aim to provide quality rehabilitation and skill development for residents with severe and chronic mental health needs. Residents have often had long or multiple admissions to inpatient care before moving to the units.

We are looking for a new occupational therapist with excellent communication skills and a clear understanding of the recovery approach in working with people who have long-term mental health needs. The applicant will also require demonstrable experience in effective team working and supporting other staff to implement meaningful care plans

Main duties of the job

The occupational therapist role is key for move-in and move-on from the projects. As such the occupational therapist is required to provide detailed assessments using the Model of Human Occupation, alongside graded interventions and group work. Work involves occupational therapy interventions both within the projects and in the community setting (ADL skills-based practice and leisure/vocational community links), with an emphasis on social inclusion and integration.

Job description Job responsibilities

  • To be responsible for providing expert occupational therapy interventions, in accordance with the HCPC codes of professional conduct.
  • To provide expert, autonomous and highly specialist occupational therapy clinical practice within a multi-disciplinary team.
  • To be able to demonstrate and explain clinical reasoning in relation to professional input to a service users care plan and to members of the team, trainees or others external to the organisation as appropriate.
  • To work in conjunction with the project managers to deliver integrated governance requirements, this may include contributing to the developing of policy and guidelines which determine practice standards.


Person Specification Qualifications Essential
  • Completed degree or diploma in Occupational Therapy
  • Evidence of further post-registration relevant training /ongoing academic study relevant to area of practice
  • Current registration with HCPC
Desirable
  • Practice educator certificate or willingness to undertake
Experience Essential
  • Demonstrable experience as an occupational therapist working with people with complex mental health and physical health issues in a community care or rehabilitation setting.
  • To demonstrate a sound knowledge and experience of evidence based best practice and research in working with service users with mental health issues
  • Demonstrable advanced understanding and experience of occupational therapy profession specific assessment tools and treatment modalities.
  • Demonstrate experience of running groups/ providing activity programmes and understanding of procedural and group processes involved.
Skills Essential
  • Able to work autonomously and to deputise for senior staff in a variety of roles when required to do so.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skill
  • Ability to maintain boundaries and form positive therapeutic relationships with service users and carers and staff.
