Emergency services are receiving increasing volumes of calls for individuals presenting with acute Mental Heath Issues in the community. A significant proportion of emergency services resource is being used to support individuals struggling with their mental health, who often present with complex issues that require further assessment and ongoing support.

The Mental Health Joint Response Vehicles (MHJRV) are a joint partnership between Pennine Care Foundation Trust and GMP, with support from NWAS.

A significant proportion of emergency services resource is being used to support individuals struggling with their mental health, who often present with complex issues that require further assessment and ongoing support.

The Mental Health Joint Response Vehicles (MHJRV) are a joint partnership between Pennine Care Foundation Trust and GMP, with support from NWAS.

Main duties of the job

  • To work as part of the MHJRV to provide an effective and efficient response to referrals from GMP and NWAS.
  • To support service users to access the right care at the right time in the least restrictive way, reducing system pressures across emergency services, our locality EDs and S136 suites.
  • To provide urgent triage of services users mental health needs in the community.
  • To complete mental health assessments following triage for those presenting with acute mental health needs.
  • To strengthen working relationships between agencies on the front line providing mutual education and sharing incite into available local resource and support for local services users.

Job description Job responsibilities

  • To triage the patients mental health needs and aid access to the appropriate service.
  • To undertake bio-psycho social assessment for people presenting with acute mental health needs.
  • To help manage any presenting risks and liaise with any family and agencies as needed.
  • To formulate a risk management plan and safety plan in collaboration with the service user.
  • Screening for physical health issues and intoxication.
  • Completion of relevant documentation to evidence decision making on scene.
  • Supporting GMP officer in the decision making where conveyance to ED/detention under S136 (As per MHA) deemed to be the most appropriate course of action.
  • Safeguarding vulnerable persons.
  • To participate in the service development of the team and take part in team business and practice
  • To ensure adherence to operational policies and participate in audits to monitor quality of care.
  • To identify with GMP/NWAS with follow up for persistent mental health presenters.
  • Adhering to documentation standards that support recording for PCFT, the police and NWAS.
  • To support recording of performance information and to look for opportunities to support the role for ongoing service development.

Person Specification Education/Qualifications Essential
  • RMN / Occupational Therapist / Social Worker equivalent.
  • Completion of Preparation for Mentorship / Practice Teacher / Fieldwork Educator qualification or willingness to complete
  • Short courses and experience to post graduate diploma level
  • Evidence of on-going CPD
Desirable
  • Non-medical prescribing qualification
  • Formal teaching qualification
  • Further training in brief psychosocial interventions
Experience Essential
  • Post registration experience
  • Proven experience of working with clients with complex needs
  • Experience of working with individuals who present to mental health services in crisis and have symptoms of mental health illness
  • Experience of working in multi-disciplinary teams
  • Experience of providing supervision to junior staff
Desirable
  • Adult acute mental health work experience
  • Experienced in the use of outcome measures such as CORE, PHQ9 and GAD7
  • Experience of working with a recovery model of care
  • Experience of gatekeeping
Knowledge Essential
  • Understanding of current mental health legislation, Safe Guarding and Child Protection Legislation
  • Awareness of NICE Guidance in the treatment of mental health problems and knowledge of treatments and interventions appropriate for individuals with mental health needs
  • Understanding of confidentiality and data protection issues.
  • Knowledge of psychosocial assessment and risk assessment / management processes
Skills and abilities Essential
  • Comprehensive mental health and risk assessment skills.
  • Ability to construct effective packages of care and risk management plans
  • Ability to deliver a range of evidence based interventions
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Comprehensive I.T Skills
  • Ability to form productive working relationships with service users, carers and multi-disciplinary staff
  • Good organisational and prioritisation skills
Desirable
  • Skills in planning, delivery and evaluation of training
  • Skills in the area of audit or research
