The Trust provides a large range and diversity of adult secure services in the East Midlands as well as secure services in South Yorks and Bassetlaw, Wathwood Hospital. The Division is in a unique position of providing its services across the full care pathway for several patient groups requiring forensic care. It is therefore part of two New Care Model programmes that aim to provide better support in the community and reduce reliance on secure beds to improve outcomes for service users and their families. The portfolio of High, Medium and Low Secure services are grouped as follows and include:

Services are delivered from a number of sites including:
  • High Secure inpatient beds at Rampton Hospital;
  • Medium Secure inpatient beds at Arnold Lodge & Wathwood Hospital
  • Low Secure inpatient beds at The Wells Road Centre
  • Community Forensic Services;
  • Integrated Offender Health Services
  • Liaison with the Criminal Justice System in Nottinghamshire.


Main duties of the job

The Offender Health Directorate is one of the largest and most successful providers of prison healthcare in the UK. The Directorate provide physical, mental health and substance misuse healthcare services in prisons across the East Midlands, Lincolnshire & Leicestershire.

The Directorate provides healthcare to 7 Prisons for a prison population of over 10 000. You are part of a large peer group of 400+ healthcare professionals with access to peer support, supervision and excellent opportunities for learning and development.

The Offender Health Team truly believes it can make a difference to the lives of offenders by offering consistent, high quality care in primary, mental health and substance misuse services that are equivalent to health services delivered outside of Prison.

Do you want to work in one of the oldest prisons in the UK, offering cutting edge, evidence-based nursing practice?

You will feel rewarded in being able to deliver a bespoke package of care to address and improve health inequalities to individuals with diverse and complex health needs?

Delivering a wide range of positive health opportunities to individuals in custody, which is equal to and often above what is offered in the community.

We work closely as part of a wide MDT, including GPs, Psychiatrists, Psychologists, RMNs, Pharmacists, Substance Misuse Experts, RGNs, Sexual Health Specialists and other Allied Professionals and have strong links with community services to promote continuity of care.We have well-established and strong relationships with the prison team, who support us to deliver healthcare safely.

There are opportunities and support for progression for the right candidate, which can be anything from completing a full Preceptorship to a masters degree.

As part of the Offender Health Directorate, Nottinghamshire Healthcare trust deliver healthcare services across 8 different prison establishments and there is opportunity to visit and learn from our colleagues at these other establishments.

Its the variety of this role which will provide a stimulating experience like no other, one minute you could be engaging patients in a mental health assessment, or delivering therapeutic interventions with patients who have primary or secondary mental health problems, the next you may be facilitating a CPA review or contributing to a risk management meeting due to an individuals self-harm behaviour.

This role enables you to work autonomously, whilst always having the support of a strong team when required.
These posts are subject to National NHS T&Cs, paid enhancements for unsocial hours working during nights, weekends and bank holidays and we offer a Golden Hello payment of £2,750 to new starters with the Trust in this role (payable in instalments over a 2 year period)

Essential
  • Registered Mental Nurse NMC

Experience
Essential
  • Post registration experience as a Registered Nurse

Desirable
  • Forensic and or prison nursing experience
  • Experience of working effectively within a MDT

Knowledge
Essential
  • CPA systems and processes

Desirable
  • Knowledge and or experience of the ACCT process
  • Local and National strategies including issues relevant to the criminal justice system

Skills
Essential
  • Good communicator with both verbal and written text.
  • Organisational skills to manage own work load
  • Basic keyboard and computer skills

Desirable
  • Ability to engage with and develop a rapport with the client group
