Southampton CAMHS have an exciting opportunity opening for the role of a qualified CBT therapist.

In CAMHS, there is often a high level of complexity in the children and young people we see. The role will involve offering assessments and specialist, evidence-based interventions to children, young people and their families with a range of presenting mental health problems.

The successful applicant will be working within an established CAMHS service alongside the lead Consultant Psychiatrist, Consultant Clinical Psychologist, Mental health nurses, and a range of other therapists.

You will work alongside young people and their families to deliver outstanding care and helping to promote independence and dignity and positively enhancing the lives of individuals in our care.

You will be based at Southampton CAMHS in the City and be part of a wider multi-disciplinary team delivering high quality interventions to children, young people and their families presenting with a range of mental health difficulties. Whilst you will have dedicated time for delivering CBT specific interventions you will also carry out some generic CAMHS work such as supporting our Duty system and initial assessments into the service.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for a confident CAMHS professional with a demonstrable track record of providing good quality evidence-based interventions with a strong interest and experience in working with delivering CBT interventions, preferably to children and young people. We are looking for someone who can bring the right attitude, skills, and knowledge and who will share our passion to deliver the best quality care experience for children and their families.

The post holder will provide assessment and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) to children and young people for a range of Anxiety and Depression related problems for which CBT is demonstrated to be clinically effective within the Core Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS).

The post holder will provide support, advice and supervision to staff working in the Core CAMHS in regards to implementing CBT based interventions across the range of presenting mental health concerns.

The post holder will work with children and young people with different cultural backgrounds and should be committed to equal opportunities

Carry out clinical audit of service performance, including service user surveys and evaluation, and help to collate and disseminate the results for feedback.

To offer assessments as part of the self-harm rota. To contribute to core CAMHS duties such as duty, triage and providing initial assessments.

Job description Job responsibilities

Clinical and Professional -

*Provide high quality specialist Cognitive Behavioural Therapy interventions within the community settings.

*Manage an allocated clinical caseload in collaboration with the Line Manager.

*Deliver evidence based Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for users with mild to severe mental health problems.

*Formulate, implement and evaluate therapy programmes for children and young people.

*Adhere to the recommended number of clinical contacts offered (unless sound clinical reason for not doing so and agreed with clinical supervisor).

*Deliver interactive psycho-education within a CBT framework to individual users and groups of Service users.

*Ensure that risk management policies are followed in collaboration with other team members involved in the care of the patient.

*Electronically record data regarding individual Service user contact activity, diary events and Service activity, using Solent NHS Trust adherence to time scale reporting in line with Trust Policies and Procedures.

*Implement national outcomes monitoring measures adopted by Solent NHS Trust.

*Attend reviews as required in order to facilitate seamless practice, in addition to clinical meetings (to be negotiated in terms of actual hours employed).

*Proactively develop robust professional relationships with General Practice staff supporting the active integration of CBT provision into Primary Care.

*Develop and maintain good professional relationships within the clinic.

*Provide consultation to and communicate and appropriate with external agencies (including housing, Police, Local Authority, Jobcentre Plus, employers etc).

*Practice within areas of specialist clinical work (e.g. OCD, social phobia, eating disorders), and provide expert knowledge in these areas.

*Actively contribute to and support the integration of clinical governance to the Service.

*Exercise personal responsibility for the systematic clinical governance of professional practice in own practice.

*Receive regular individual and/or group clinical supervision.

*Be committed to developing and maintaining own CPD in relation to Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

*Fulfil the BABCP code of conduct and follow BABCP ethical guidelines in professional work.

*To receive regular case management supervision from line manager.

*Maintain accurate electronic records of clinical work so as to allow the effective monitoring, review, audit and evaluation of the service provided.

*Collate and electronically record assessment and outcome measures and patient satisfaction data for Service audit and national benchmarking.

*Maintain and develop clinical knowledge and clinical expertise.

*Actively participate in regular monitoring, review and evaluation of the service provided.

*Carry out clinical audit of service performance, including service user surveys and evaluation, and help to collate and disseminate the results for feedback.

Communication -

*To communicate effectively through written notes and reports and verbal communication with all relevant personnel involved in the YP's care.

*To possess IT skills in order to effectively communicate in writing with colleagues, other professionals and families in accordance with trust policies e.g., writing of comprehensive report.

*To liaise and joint work with colleagues, other professionals and agencies as required in relation to both clinical work and the wider agenda of working in partnership within a multi-agency framework.

*To participate in team clinical meetings in order to share expertise, promote good practice and the safety of clients.

*To participate in referrals meeting as required. Making clinical decisions as part of this group regarding the appropriateness of new referrals in line with referral criteria. Assessing the level of clinical need for referrals accepted and communicating outcomes to referrers.

Knowledge, Education and Training -

*Undertake training and mentoring of staff and other groups as prescribed.

* To take responsibility for identifying own training and development needs, suggestions for improvements to the service and policy changes to the line manager.

*Compliance with Trust arrangements for continuing professional development.

*Participate in training programmes for learners and induction programmes for new staff.

*Contribute to the clinical supervision meeting.

Management and Leadership -

*Responsibility for ensuring that:

*Staff are managed and standards of work are maintained and Trust policies for the management of staff performance are adhered to.

*Appraisals of staff directly managed are undertaken and that the appraisal process is maintained throughout the team.

*Staff receive appropriate health and safety and other mandatory training as prescribed and those relevant records are maintained.

*Other records are maintained by the team ensuring compliance with the agreed record keeping systems of the Trust.

*Informed consent is obtained where appropriate and documented in accordance with Trust procedures.

*New and replacement equipment is not used until it has been commissioned in accordance with Trust policy.

*Appropriate risk and other assessments are completed and documented in a timely manner in accordance with Trust policy.

*Defective equipment is reported and made safe without delay in accordance with Trust procedures.

*Equipment is maintained in accordance with Trust policy.

*Infection prevention and control procedures are followed by all staff within their area of responsibility.

*All staff follow Trust clinical governance requirements.

Person Specification Qualifications Essential
  • Post Graduate Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy or Equivalent
  • Accredited Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist (BABCP) (or eligible for)
  • Evidence of ongoing Professional Development in CBT
Desirable
  • Post Registration qualification in clinical practice
Experience Essential
  • Post Registration clinical experience in CBT
  • Experience of working within a CAMHS setting
  • Experience of treating a wide range of psychological disorders using CBT
  • Experience of working autonomously
  • Substantial experience of assessing and recording Risk Management plans
  • Experience of working with complex conditions as identified through ICD10
  • Experience of providing education, teaching and training in relation to CBT
  • Experience of collating and recording clinical outcomes
  • Engagement in an ongoing CPD CBT programme (including attendance at CBT conferences or training)
  • Clinical experience of working within a multi-disciplinary team
Desirable
  • Post registration clinical experience of working within the community
Additional Criteria Essential
  • Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment, intervention and management frequently requiring sustained and intense concentration
  • Well-developed skills in the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, complex, highly technical and/or clinically sensitive information to clients, their families, carers, and other professional colleagues both within and outside the NHS
  • Skills in providing consultation to other professional and non-professional groups
  • Ability to teach and train others, using a variety of complex multi-media materials suitable for presentations within public, professional and academic settings
  • Ability to identify and employ mechanisms of clinical governance as appropriate, to support and maintain clinical practice in the face of regular exposure to highly emotive material and challenging behaviour.
