The Royal Free London are expanding our existing drug and alcohol liaison team and our liver transplant addictions service. We are looking for highly skilled and motivated addictions nurses to join us in our exciting service development.The drug and alcohol service at the Royal Free assess an average of ninety patients each month. Patients are referred from departments across the hospital and can be seen as inpatients and outpatients. Working with outpatients we use motivational interviewing, patient centred follow up and non-medical prescribing in short-term and medium-term interventions. Our audits suggest that up to 90% of patients we engage in clinic do not represent to the Accident & Emergency with symptoms related to their addiction.The liver transplant service at the Royal Free performs over 100 liver transplants each year. The transplant addictions team undertake a holistic assessment of pre transplant patients, liaising with community services and providing a summary of addiction history to the multi-disciplinary transplant team. You will form an understanding of the patient's risk to relapse and deliver a recommendation for treatment which the team will consider when deciding on suitability for transplant. You will aim to form a therapeutic relationship with patients with problem alcohol use who are on the transplant waiting list and provide life long follow up to those who are transplanted.

Main duties of the job

The existing team of two 8a's, (one for transplant addictions and one for drug and alcohol addictions), and two band 7's are now looking to expand with recruitment of three additional band 7 addiction nurses. When fully recruited we will be looking to provide a seven-day service with equity of access to patients across Royal Free, Barnet and Chase Farm sites. We will expand services with our aim to provide an innovative world class service that will include daily availability of out patient clinics as well as a nurse led ambulatory drug and alcohol detox service.The ideal candidate would be an experienced addictions nurse, a competent non - medical prescriber with enthusiasm and drive to work as part of a forward thinking multi-disciplinary team. The post will require some cross site working at Royal Free, Barnet and in future Chase Farm (with planned travel time). Core hours are Monday - Friday 9-5 and weekend working is required at a maximum of 1 weekend in 5. Rotation across the drug and alcohol team and the transplant addictions team will take place approximately every 18 - 24 months. At the time of recruitment, we will inform successful candidates which rotation they are to be offered to start in.Candidates with motivation who do not currently fulfil the experience required for a band 7 post are encouraged to apply as consideration would be given to a band 6 training post for the right individual. A willingness to undertake non-medical prescribing training is essential.
