Job Purpose

The role of the specialist occupational therapist is to provide specialist knowledge and skills within the cardio-respiratory service to help promote wellness and provide expertise regarding the promotion of independent living along with the management of the symptoms associated with these.

The postholder will be responsible for the maintenance of a caseload of patients referred to respiratory and cardiology occupational therapy services. In addition, they will be responsible for the delivery of relevant occupational therapy education sessions recommended for the self-management of chronic lung disease via national and local guidance.

Main duties of the job

To be responsible for the provision of Occupational Therapy services within the sphere of cardio-respiratory care.

To work as part of a multidisciplinary team to facilitate timely assessment and intervention to promote well being.

To hold responsibility for own caseload, working with and without direct supervision.

To provide educational support within the remit of cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation courses with OT specific sessions based on ADL's, energy conservation and managing anxiety associated symptoms.

To provide educational support for the wider clinical team.

To support with assessment and liaising with external departments providing written reports for adaptations and applications.

To work flexibly, being willing to work at other locations if / when required.

To complete OT specific assessments including those required to assess cognition, sensory, visual and postural needs, including planning and carrying out suitable treatment plans.

To independently manage a delegated caseload of straightforward and complex cases demonstrating a high level of problem solving, clinical reasoning skills and professional judgement.

To select and apply specific Occupational Therapy assessments addressing occupational performance and skills deficits enabling clients in the areas of productivity, self-maintenance and leisure.

To carry out and record comprehensive assessments within clinic, class and home environments.

To prescribe and monitor equipment, adaptations and assistive technology to improve or maintain independence.

To contribute and participate in training events with other members of the team.

To participate in clinical audit and measures which demonstrate clinical effectiveness as part of the evaluation of the team's work.
