An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dedicated and motivated individual to join the Blood Sciences Team as our Haematology Operational Manager at Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.

Responsible for the management, delivery, and development of the Haematology department within Blood Sciences, the post holder will be a HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist with considerable experience who has shown innovation, drive, and leadership in their existing position.

We are looking for someone who is able to manage a dynamic and changing workload providing oversight to Haematology. The post holder will be expected to utilise skills around human resources, finance and organisational change.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will practice as a specialist registered Biomedical Scientist in the Blood Sciences Department, working as part of a team and assisting the Blood Sciences Service Manager in the provision of a high-quality diagnostic service to Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, General Practitioners and other service users.

The principal duty of the post holder will be the operational management of the Blood Sciences laboratories, maintaining UKAS standards and responsibility for the provision of a prompt, safe and comprehensive Haematology service.

They will act as a Haematology Operational Manager, managing and directing the resources within the Blood Sciences department across the Trust on a day-to-day basis, ensuring that high quality results are produced in a timely and cost-effective way.

They will role model compassionate and inclusive leadership to shape the creation of a collective leadership culture within the trust.

The post holder will have operational oversight and autonomy . They will be the lead specialist in Haematology, responsible for providing expert advice and support to service users locally, regionally and nationally. They provide professional management leadership for BMSs, MLAs and other Scientific and Support staff. They will liaise closely with the Blood Sciences Service Manager and Clinical Pathology Lead, providing timely and accurate information concerning all aspects of service provision.

This remit includes ensuring the technical and scientific robustness of analytical equipment and techniques, system trouble shooting and maintenance of turnaround times, competency of staff, interpreting laboratory results and providing appropriate advice, the maintenance and review of internal and external quality assurance and compliance with national quality standards e.g. ISO 15189, the efficient use of financial, material and human resources and ensuring there are adequate numbers of trained staff to maintain a 24hr service.

Qualifications / Experience

Essential

• IBMS Approved BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science or equivalent.
• FIBMS or MSc in Biomedical Science
• Registered with HCPC
• Post registration experience plus sufficient additional experience at a senior grade to be able to manage a laboratory
• Good understanding of UKAS accreditation and quality management systems & how they are applied to departments

Desirable

• Chartered Scientist
• Recognised management qualification
• IBMS Specialist Diploma in Haematology
