An exciting new initiative has been developed in Hertfordshire Community NHS Trust to develop a Child Death Review process for all child deaths in Hertfordshire.

Currently there is an established JAR process for Unexpected and Expected Child Deaths and the objective is further develop our holistic reviews of all the deaths of 0 - 18 year old children and young people.

The Post Holder, in collaboration with the Safeguarding Children Nurse Manager for Child Deaths in Hertfordshire, will be responsible for advising on the implementation, coordination and management of the response to all child deaths of children who live in Hertfordshire to have a coordinated approach for children who die in Hertfordshire who live in another County.

In addition, to be a a member of the JAR Nursing team to follow up, risk assess, action plan and support grieving parents and their families.

Main duties of the job

The Post Holder, in collaboration with the Safeguarding Children Nurse Manager for child deaths in Hertfordshire, will be responsible for advising on the implementation, coordination and management of the response to all child deaths of children who live in Hertfordshire.

To liaise with other counties when children die in Hertfordshire and live out of area.

Work closely with the Designated Child Death Doctors to implement the JAR for all child deaths in Hertfordshire and to support and coordinate process (protocols, pathways and monitoring systems).

Ensure that the deaths of all children normally resident in Hertfordshire who die in a community setting are reviewed and a Joint Agency Response (JAR) is triggered where appropriate and being part of the JAR nursing rota.

To support the Electronic Child Death Overview Process (ECDOP).

Arrange and attend internal and external child death meetings as requested, this includes strategy discussions, multi-agency meetings, Child Death Review Meetings (CDRM), Child Death Overview Panel meetings and any other appropriate meeting.

The successful post holder will be supported in developing their safeguarding knowledge and skills to:

• Be part of the JAR Nursing team and support the Safeguarding Children Nurse manage to support the ECDOP process and partnership working.
• Communicate and share information to improve outcomes and safeguard children.
• Support front line staff to focus on risk assessments for children & young people and reviewing action plans

Person Specification
Qualifications and Training
Essential

• 1st Level Registered Nurse with evidence of further training to degree level
• Evidence of self-managed continued professional development
• Evidence of post registration training such as Masters level qualifications relevant to safeguarding or equivalent experience and the willingness to complete further training to support this role
• Teaching qualification
• Supervisory qualification or equivalent/ willingness to complete
• Qualifications relevant to safeguarding
• Advanced knowledge of key legislation and documents relevant to safeguarding children, Demonstrates knowledge and application of theoretical frameworks used in safeguarding

Experience and Knowledge
Essential

• Previous experience working with families, children and young people
• Clinical experience of safeguarding children.
• Effective contribution to local multi-agency groups, systems and networks.
• Delivery of safeguarding children training to health staff and of some aspect of multi-agency training
• An understanding and experience of court procedures
• Specialist knowledge of the Children Act, Working Together to Safeguard Children 2018 and other relevant Government and National Guidance
• An understanding of local Safeguarding Children policies
• Knowledge of the health of children and young people and the nature of child maltreatment
