This is an exciting opportunity to join the new Powys Health Protection Service. The Health Protection Clinical Nurse Specialist will play a lead role in providing clinical expertise and leadership to this new and evolving team, working closely with Public Health Wales and Powys County Council Health Protection teams.

The Health Protection Service provides response to planned and unplanned assessment of health need following exposure to communicable and non-communicable disease.

This is an exciting and varied role with scope to develop according to your strengths and experience. The role requires leadership skills, flexibility, adaptability, resilience and the ability to travel around Powys.

Main duties of the job

As part of the team, the post holder will have excellent communications andhighly developed interpersonal skills to contribute to the provision of specialist advice to patients and healthcare professionals, also providing support locally to local authorities, hospitals, primary care and community settings. This includes complex and sensitive information such as results of HIV, TB and blood borne virus tests.

Ensure patients as well as health professionals understand complex requirements of communicable diseases, including providing adviceand guidance to nursing & residential homes, patients on the nature of the disease, the method of spread and how that can be limited by treatment and infection prevention control measures.

Be part of the leadership team to support the implementation of aneffective and efficient service underpinned by appropriate nationalguidelines. Lead in the development or adaptation of clinical policies andprotocols for the management and response to cases of communicable andinfectious disease in the community.

Work autonomously and in partnership with the multi-disciplinary team toundertake screening, assessment, acute management, and advise in the event of cases or outbreaks of communicable disease within Powys.

Using leadership skills, the post holder will line manage junior staff and be responsible for their development along with day to day management of workplans and staff rota.

Qualifications & Knowledge

Essential

  • NMC Registrant
  • Postgraduate qualifying award in a relevant subject
  • Significant experience skills and knowledge demonstrable to Masters level
  • Knowledge and understanding of the principles of infectious and communicable disease


Desirable

  • Masters qualification Health Protection / Public Health or similar Teaching / training qualification
  • Community Nursing qualification
  • Robust knowledge of local protocols and national policy
  • Knowledge of service development and implementation within timeframes


Experience

Essential

  • Substantial significant experience of dealing with public health challenges in a community setting
  • Ability to assess and implement a range of evidenced based policies and procedures
  • Proficient in multi-agency partnership working
  • Ably demonstrate autonomous working and management of own caseload
  • Experience of providing clinical supervision
  • Evidence of continuing professional development


Desirable
