Job Purpose - Monday - Friday 8:30-4:30

This post has responsibility for leading a team of SLTs providing domiciliary and outpatient care to patients in the Borough of Harrow. The post holder will be an autonomous practitioner providing highly specialist speech and language therapy services to a community caseload of clients with complex needs. A significant proportion of these clients will have English as an additional language (EAL). They will be expected to manage their own caseload, providing second opinions and specialist advice working within professional standards. To support with the management of patients with dysphagia they will have access to VFS/FEES if required.

Main duties of the job

To clinically supervise / provide day to day management of clinical staff providing community and outpatient services and ensure that the appropriate appraisal systems are in place for all team members

To participate in recruitment, selection and induction of staff for the Adult Speech Language Therapy Team

To provide regular clinical and professional advice, support, and supervision to Assistants, newly qualified, Band 5 and Band 6 Speech & Language Therapists within the Adult Speech & Language Therapy Community Team, as appropriate.

To facilitate the development of more junior colleagues' problem solving/negotiation skills formally & informally via peer review/ one-to-one coaching

To participate in Individual Performance Appraisals for more junior Community Team staff on an annual basis and to facilitate staff in achieving their objectives.

Job responsibilities

To prioritise and manage a highly complex mainly neurological caseload independently making differential diagnosis & clinical management decisions on the basis of evidence from assessment frequently weighing up complex clinical management decisions in the context of conflicting clinical indicators.

To analyse auditory, visual and kinaesthetic aspects of clients communication and to identify appropriate strategies to facilitate and enhance communicative effectiveness in the home, at work and other relevant settings

To demonstrate clinical effectiveness by developing and implementing Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapy Treatment evidence based practice programmes providing thorough evaluation of clinical outcomes.

To use clinical judgement and highly specialist skills to evaluate deterioration in clients health status communicating effectively the appropriate professionals in a timely manner

To demonstrate skills in motivating clients and /or carers to engage in the therapeutic process.

To develop clear unidisciplinary / multidisciplinary clinical protocols based on best practice. To demonstrate high level of clinical effectiveness by use of evidence-based practice and outcome measures.

To actively participate and take a lead on SLT Triage for new referrals as required.

Person Specification

Education/Qualification

Essential

  • Recognised Speech and Language Therapy Degree or equivalent
  • Registration with relevant professional body
  • Registration with HCPC
  • Dysphagia competent


Desirable

  • Registration with Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists
  • Evidence of further study e.g. postgraduate degree, short courses relating to community setting


Experience

Essential

  • Assessment & treatment of complex clients with speech, language, communication needs and dysphagia
  • Writing reports and maintaining case notes
  • Applying the principals of research methodology through clinical audit
  • Experience of supervising junior members of staff


Desirable

  • Experience of working in acute and community settings as well as in nursing homes.
  • Member of a relevant CEN


Skills & Knowledge

Essential

  • Knowledge of assessment tools relating the neurological/community client group with speech, language, communication and dysphagia needs.
  • Knowledge of a range of therapeutic interventions relating to the neurological/community client group with speech, language, communication and dysphagia needs.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including observation, listening and empathy
  • Able to work as part of a team and remain calm under pressure
