The Band 8a Maternity Matron for Compliance, (Audit, ATAIN (Avoiding Term Admissions into Neonatal units), Transitional Care, and Saving Babies' Lives) plays a pivotal role in enhancing the quality of care provided to mothers, birthing people and their families. This role focuses on implementing and leading initiatives related to clinical audit, reducing avoidable term admissions, optimising transitional care, and supporting the Saving Babies' Lives care bundle. The Lead Midwife will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to drive improvements, ensure compliance with best practices, and support the achievement of national and local maternity standards.

Main duties of the job

Lead on monitoring standards of a range of clinical governance, clinical effectiveness and patient safety activity, in liaison with other multidisciplinary professionals and functional heads within the Maternity and Quality and Safety Team with direct line management of these teams on both sites.

Work closely with the Deputy Directors of Midwifery and Nursing, the Divisional triumvirate and the Trust Governance Team.

Maintain strong working relationships with clinical colleagues.

Ensure the triangulation of information and intelligence from across the Service, the division and the Trust, in order to provide leadership and direction in relation to Quality Governance, Effectiveness and Quality Improvements.

Work in partnership with the senior obstetric and midwifery team to assist in driving forward the wider Maternity leadership, operational and strategic agendas.

Job responsibilities

Leadership and Strategy Development
  • Act as the lead expert and advocate for Audit, ATAIN, Transitional Care, and the Saving Babies' Lives care bundle.
  • Develop and implement strategic plans aligned with national initiatives, local policies, and Trust objectives.
  • Ensure the successful integration of ATAIN and Saving Babies' Lives pathways into maternity services.
  • Contribute to policy development and quality assurance across the maternity unit.
  • Provide leadership to the midwifery team in relation to workforce matters, promoting a culture of collaboration and excellence.
  • Act as a role model for professional practice, encouraging the highest standards of midwifery and nursing care and clinical governance

Clinical Audit and Quality Improvement
    • Ensure compliance with national standards and guidelines (e.g., NICE, CQC, RCOG).
    • Lead multidisciplinary meetings to discuss audit findings, quality issues, and action plans for improvement.

    ATAIN (Avoiding Term Admissions Into Neonatal units)
    • Monitor term admissions to neonatal units and work to reduce avoidable admissions.
    • Provide guidance on best practices in managing term babies at risk of admission, including hypothermia, hypoglycaemia, respiratory difficulties, and jaundice.
    • Educate and support staff in implementing strategies to reduce avoidable admissions and improve outcomes for term infants.
    • Work with neonatal and obstetric teams to create a cohesive approach to care and minimize term admissions.

Person Specification

Education and qualifications

Essential

  • Registered Midwife with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
  • Evidence of continuous professional development
  • Master's degree in a relevant field or equivalent experience


Experience

Essential

  • Extensive experience in midwifery, with substantial exposure to neonatal and transitional care
  • Proven leadership experience in quality improvement, audit, and/or project management.
  • Strong knowledge of the ATAIN program, transitional care models, and Saving Babies' Lives care bundle
  • Experience in leading and implementing change within maternity services


Skills and knowledge

Essential

  • Excellent leadership and management skills with the ability to inspire and motivate teams
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Ability to manage complex service issues and provide innovative solutions.
  • Knowledge of current national maternity agenda
  • Good level of skills in Microsoft Word and Excel
