CDDFT Podiatry Department are looking for an enthusiastic and committed Podiatrist to join our diverse team. The post is for 22.5 hours band 7 in-patient. I may have some band 6 vacancies also is applicants wanted additional hours within community Podiatry.

The post holder will work collaboratively as part of the inpatient team to deliver specialist podiatric care to people admitted to County Durham and Darlington Foundation Trust to meet the standards set by NICE NG 19 (2019).

Take a clinical lead role for a specialist area of inpatient podiatry work within:

Diabetes and Tissue Viability

Provide professional leadership to the wider Team and act as an expert practitioner resource, leading by example.

Employs specialist techniques and programmes of care in the treatment of patients

Provides specialist podiatry advice both within and externally to the Trust

Assesses and treats patients with specialised care needs which includes referrals from other practitioners and disciplines

Undertake training of other staff and students

Lead by example on service transformation activity and maintain the Teams focus on continuous service improvement and value for money

Main duties of the job

Clinical Responsibilities

Assess foot wounds/tissue breakdown of all patients identified by ward staff, AMU, A & E, SDEC , either identified on admission or throughout stay (including pressure damage)

Provide Specialist Podiatry input in the care plan of Diabetic Foot pathology, particularly in regards to debridement, antibiotics, dressings and offloading/Pressure relief.

Attend ward huddle and liaise with other disciplines for patients that require an MDT approach (including Diabetologist, Vascular Consultant, Microbiology, Orthopaedics where appropriate).

Be the link between Inpatient (medical and surgical teams) and Outpatient care for patients with Diabetic foot complications to ensure appropriate follow-up on discharge locally and the pathway of care between community/primary care and secondary care is as seamless as possible

Plan and deliver Diabetic foot care education to healthcare professionals (formalised training e.g. tissue viability/diabetes nurses training days etc.) and ad-hoc individualised training to ward staff, student nurses etc. as identified.

We have a centre for planned care in Bishop Auckland and provide care from community hospitals in Chester-le-Street, Shotley Bridge, Barnard Castle, Sedgefield and Weardale as well as over 80 other community based settings and providing care in patients' homes.

Job responsibilities

To be responsible for the assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation of podiatric care for patients within a caseload of diabetes and tissue viability patients

To provide appropriate podiatric health education to patients and carers

To ensure that all interventions are designed using, where possible, evidence based practice and to evaluate outcomes

To work across acute, community and primary health care sectors as part of a multidisciplinary team with direct input to patient care providing advice to patients and carers

To be responsible for the maintenance of their own documentation for patient records, reports and audits.

Assist in the collection of data for National Diabetes audits including DiabeticFoot audit and devise local audits to determine impact of the Inpatient Podiatrist role and areas for improvement in delivering the pathway ofcare/education requirements etc. Involvement in route cause analysis ofmajor amputations undertaken.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills both written and verbal, including persuasive and reassurance skills which are essential in the effective communication of complex and sensitive information to patients and in communication with other health care professionals.

Qualifications

  • BSc (Hons) in Podiatric Medicine
  • Local Analgesia Certificate


Desirable

  • Evidence of CPD
  • Non-medical prescribing qualification
  • Post graduate qualifications

  • Ability to work under pressure


Experience

Essential

  • Graduation from a School of Podiatric Medicine
  • Under graduate experience of a broad range of podiatric conditions
  • Substantial experience in the high risk foot, diabetes and Tissue Viability


Desirable

  • Evidence of working within acute in-patient areas
