We have an exciting opportunity to Lead our Cardiac Surgery Surgical Care Practitioner Team. The team is made up of both trainees and very experienced SCP's. Here at NUH we have bespoke cardiac theatres which sit next to the Cardiac ITU all housed within the purpose built Trent Cardiac Centre (TCC) at the City Hospital Campus. As Lead SCP 70% of your time will be clinical, working alongside the Cardiac Surgeons assisting in complex surgeries the applicant must have a minimum of 3 years SCP experience in Cardiac Surgery, this should include endoscopic vein/artery harvesting. Experience in complex and minimal invasive procedures including complex aortic surgery and endoscopic mitral procedures would also be advantageous. 30% of your time will be to manage the SCP team working alongside Consultants and the Specialty Management Team (SMT) to further develop the team and service.

Main duties of the job

Main duties of this job include

Managing the SCP team - staff development, appraisals, staff governance

Performing clinical duties of SCP - assisting Consultant Surgeon in performing cardiac surgery

harvesting of conduit suitable for coronary artery bypass operations by harvesting long saphenous veins and radial arteries

Endoscopic vein and artery harvesting

Acting as first and second assistant under direction of senior surgical colleague for cardiac procedures, including tissue retraction, applying suction, diathermy, maintaining a clear field of surgical vision, assisting with preparing patient for cardio-pulmonary bypass and monitoring patients vital signs. Closure of wounds

Work shifts and cover out of hours on calls.

Job responsibilities

To provide specialist advice and assistance to the Consultant surgeon and Specialist registrars, during adult cardiac surgeries. The post holder will participate in all aspects of preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative care at an advanced level after relevant training Masters or equivalent qualification/experience. They will perform duties to a high standard in order to achieve effective and safe patient care and recovery within the areas of the Cardiac Operating theatres, Outpatients Department, Pre-assessment and Cardiac ITU/CHDU/Ward.

The post holder will manage the SCP team, including all governance, training, development, recruitment.

The post holder will deliver a 70% clinical component to their role and 30% related to their management, leadership, innovation and educational responsibilities.

Experience

Essential

  • To assist the surgical team with the assessment and preparation of the pre-operative and post-operative surgical patients
  • Can work both autonomously and as part of a multi professional team
  • Ability to teach, train and educate all members of the MDT
  • Implement and interpret policies and procedures


Desirable

  • Involvement in leading investigation of serious clinical incidents


Skills

Essential

  • Able to undertake highly complex clinical duties/procedures that require highly developed skills and at times a high degree of precision
