We are a multi-disciplinary team of clinical & non-clinical staff who provide high quality, user-friendly diagnostic radiology service. It is an exciting time to join the team as a new Scanning Centre is being built, scheduled to open in 2026

Main duties of the job

Essential qualifications include excellent communication and organisational skills and organisational skills, a dedication to CPD and practical knowledge of radiation protection, legislation, health & safety requirements. Flexibility in your approach to work is essential, with an unwavering commitment to keeping patients at the forefront of your practice.

• To work within CT areas located throughout the trust conducting cross-sectional examinations using a range of CT equipment upon various patient types both as anautonomous practitioner and as part of a multi-professional team, in a manner that meets profession, departmental and legal standards and requirements.
• Toproactively assist in the management of the CT scanning department on a daily basis whilst fostering a safe and efficient environment for patients, staff, and visitors. This should include archiving correct patient data to PACS (picture archiving communications systems) and RIS (radiology information systems).
• To supervise and teach radiographers new to CT, student radiographers and imaging assistants and to actively help, teach and support training specialty doctors in radiology.
• Ensurepatient safety is maintained and patient experience is positive by treating all patients, relatives and colleagues with respect, dignity, and courtesy in accordance with Trust values.
• Ensuringthat at all times you act within your sphere of competence.
• When required participate in CT research and development.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Apprentice and Student Radiographers rotate through the department from the Universities of Hertfordshire and Exeter. We value excellent communication and organisational skills, a commitment to CPD, and strong knowledge of radiation protection, legislation, health & safety requirements. Flexibility and a patient-centred approach are essential.

The department supports role extension and has practicing radiographers reporting on axial and appendicular skeleton as well as Chest and Abdominal Reporting.

As well as CT, the department also Interventional Suite, PACS, MRI and Cardiology. There will be a commitment to the out of hours service.Clinical:

• Workunsupervised, performing all CT scans following imaging parameters set down in scanning protocols.
• Liaisewith referral source where clarification is required regarding the selection of the most clinically appropriate imaging examination and prioritise cases by urgent clinical need.
• Actas a professional resource regarding CT procedures for other directorate staff and clinical colleagues.

Operational responsibilities:

• Liaise with other departments / wards within the hospital and various external sources to provide a quality service to patients and clinicians. Keeping them informed of any delays to patient throughput, which might result because of, for example excessive workload.
• Create, maintain, and enhance working relationships with wards, clinicians, and staff.
• Actas a point of advice for patient enquiries regarding their referral.

Managerial responsibilities:

• Deputise in the absence of senior staff such as CT section heads or their deputies and be responsible for the smooth day to day running of the CT department.
• Be familiar with the range of technical applications available on CT imaging equipment.
• Monitorreport equipment faults and to determine the severity of the problem and its probable impact on the workload. To make a balanced judgement on when to call in a service engineer, considering the effect on the normal running of the CT Service.

Communication:

• To assess specific communication needs of individual patients. To anticipate where communication difficulties might make completion of the CT checklists impossible and implement alternative methods to ensure that patient safety is maintained.
• Communicate effectively and empathetically with patients and their escorts prior to, during and after an examination

Analytical and judgmental skills:

• Able to synthesize complex CT referral details through analysis, interpretation and comparison of a range of different imaging options.

Responsibilities for Human Resources:

• To assist in the supervision and clinical instruction of undergraduate radiographic staff.
• Toundertake formalised assessments of undergraduate students and document findings in accordance with each academic institutions requirements.

Qualifications and knowledge

Essential

• BSc (Hons) Radiography, DCR(D) Diploma of the College of Radiographers or equivalent
• Health and Care Professions Council Registration
• Evidence of a sound level of computer literacy (MS Teams, word, outlook, power point and excel)
• Familiarity with hospital information systems (HIS), radiology information systems (RIS) and picture archiving communications systems (PACS)
• Knowledge of a wide range of diagnostic imaging procedures
• Evidence of keeping informed of the current CT imaging techniques and practices
• Knowledge of relevant national imaging standards (e.g., IR(ME)R 2017, IRR '17 and associated codes of practice)

Desirable

• Possesses 6-month post qualification knowledge and experience as a radiographer.
• UK radiographer work experience
