The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is offering an exciting opportunity for you to join our Maternity Department as a Band 5 rotational Midwife. The trust provides maternity services for the City of Leeds and beyond - an area with a widely diverse demographic and population.

Main duties of the job

Maintain a high standard of women centred care in accordance with Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust guidelines and policies. Act as a referral agent and co-ordinator of care provision. Establishes effective multi-agency collaboration across the primary/secondary interface to meet the needs of the patients. Act as a role model for the development of clinical skills and knowledge within the department team. Maintain a safe working environment. Support the Senior Midwife in setting and monitoring standards and seek to continuously improve standards and the quality of patient care, including national standards. Promote evidence based practice. Participate in the audit and evaluation of clinical practice in the interests of promoting quality care. Provide assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of midwifery care for women and their babies, ensuring written records are kept to NMC standards.

Job Title: Midwife (Rotational)

Reports To: Senior Midwife (Sister)

JOB PURPOSE

To provide midwifery care in whichever setting the woman or baby requires care. This will include hospital, health centres, childrens centres and womens homes. To be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care in the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal periods. To carry out all relevant forms of care with minimal supervision.

To regularly take charge of the ward in the absence of the Senior Midwife (Sister). To participate in the in-service training and preceptorship/mentorship of junior staff, post basic learners and students.

JOB DIMENSIONS

The maternity unit has approximately 8,500 births a year. LTHT is a tertiary referral centre for both obstetrics and neonatology. Other specialities within the hospital that impact on maternity unit are feto-maternal medicine, adult and neonatal cardiology, neonatal surgery and a reproductive medicine unit.

The post holder will work within the hospital environment caring for women and their babies before, during and after pregnancy depending on the area.

S/he participates in rotation throughout the maternity service and covers both day / night shifts and on call as required by service need.

The midwife maintains personal contact with women and meets their needs on an individual basis by listening, assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating care. Is aware of the anxieties of women and their families and the support they may need.

S/he carries out midwifery care to the highest possible standard according to agreed policies and procedures, as well as the NMC Standards.

The midwife ensures that the appropriate practitioner is informed promptly of a complication or change in the mother's or baby's condition.

She ensures effective communication with health care professionals and other personnel to ensure continued care to the patient and assists in the smooth running of the ward/area.

Reports on the changes occurring in treatment and client needs during the shift.

Is prepared to work in areas of the midwifery service other than where based in order to meet the requirements of the service.

Maintains the supply and custody of drugs/medicines etc including keeping agreed register. Ensures that measuring, administration and recording of all drugs and medicines is carried out in accordance with the rules of the NMC and according to Trust policy.
