We have an exciting opportunity for a Clinical Specialist Nurse to develop and support the mental health in-reach team at HMP Full Sutton- a category A, high secure prison on the outskirts of York.

HMP Full Sutton has a well established mental health in reach team that includes, Nurses, Psychiatry, Psychologists, Counselling, PWPs, Speech and Language Therapists and other operational support posts.

Your clinical expertise and extensive knowledge will support the delivery of Mental Health provision and develop pathways, quality care and clinical governance structures.

Ideally, you will have extensive experience of working within a prison or wider forensic services- though applications will be considered if you are able to demonstrate extensive mental health experience in other settings. You will have a positive and compassion focused attitude towards service users within the prison environment. You will have an awareness of the clinical difficulties that arise for individuals within high secure environments and be able to lead by example. The post requires the highest standards of professional practice, and exceptional communication and relationship skills.

The post holder will be the professional lead for nurses within the teams, leading on professional development and the delivery of robust evidence based practice. They will ensure high professional standards of nursing.

The candidate would be a Non-Medical Prescriber or be willing to work towards this within an agreed timeframe.

Condensed hours and/or flexible working can be considered for the right candidate. The core hours of the mental health team are 0730-1930, Monday-Friday 0800-1600, Sat-Sun. This post would be expected to work within Mon-Fri hours.

Person Specification

Qualifications/Experience

Essential

  • Current Professional Registration with Nursing and Midwifery Council - RMN / RNLD
  • Recognised Practice Assessor/Practice Supervisor or currently in progress of achieving.
  • Trained in Clinical Supervision and providing Clinical Supervision or in the process of achieving
  • Postgraduate diploma in a subject relevant to the area Or be willing to work towards and achieve within 2 years and
  • Within the first year of being in post hold a recognised qualification in a governed therapy/advanced clinical qualification e.g Intermediate Systemic Family Therapy/Post Grad diploma in CBT/British Isles Dialectical Behaviour Therapy /NMP (Independent Prescriber)
  • And have Equivalent clinical experience to that of a Post Grad Diploma/master's level such as working as a band 6 (or above) in relevant clinical area with significant experience (see below under experience), together with evidence of relevant CPD
  • Significant experience working with patients with complex needs in the specialist field.
  • Significant experience working with patients who display risk behaviours
  • Clinical risk assessment and management and its application in practice
  • Working collaboratively with service users their families and carers
  • Working in a multi-disciplinary team
  • Quality improvement activities


Desirable

  • Extensive experience of working in mental health services


Knowledge

Essential

  • Extensive knowledge of current issues relating to health needs of patients in the field of practice, regionally and nationally
  • Understanding and working knowledge of the legal framework and statutory obligations under the Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act
  • Detailed understanding of Safeguarding and its application in practice.
  • Clinical Risk Assessment and Management and its application in practice
  • Clinical Governance and its application in practice.
  • Working knowledge of clinical medicines management
  • Understanding of psychological models of care and treatment (depending on specialist area)
  • Clinical Governance and its application in practice.


Desirable

  • Awareness of criminal justice legal frameworks

  • Ability to travel independently and cover cross sites.
