An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated Senior Medical Engineering Technician to join and lead a small friendly team based at Furness General Hospital.
The department is responsible for the commissioning, service and maintenance of wide range of medical devices used within all areas of clinical care including ventilation, endoscopy, Neonatal and theatre based medical equipment
Main duties of the job
Duties will include leading of a small team of engineers to provide medical device commissioning, service, repair, implementation of regulatory action and safe disposal of devices at the end of clinical life on the Furness General Hospital site and community locations
You will have
1) A good knowledge of electro-mechanical engineering theory,
2) A logical approach to fault finding on complex electro- mechanical medical equipment
3) Proficient IT skills in the use of a database system for maintenance recording and be familiar with the Microsoft office applications suite.
4) Knowledge of general medical equipment and medical terminology is essential.
5) The ability to communicate effectively and build lasting relationships with all members of staff, visitors and suppliers
6) Good organisational skills and be able to manage and prioritise the day to day workload of the site.
About us
We operatefrom three main hospitals-Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, andUlverstonCommunity Health Centre.
FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.
WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.
All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies,daycase and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Planned maintenance, servicing, repair and calibration of across all clinical areas of electronic medical equipment which will include working on high risk devices including Ventilators, more complex neonatal equipment, Lung Function systems
A proportion of this post will involve the day to day running of the Furness general site including the planning and prioritisation of engineers workload on the site including planning for service activities and visits. This may also include being a Tri-site lead for additional designated duties listed within this job description.
Deputise in the absence of the Chief medical Engineering Technician
To provide specialist technical knowledge on any clinical incidents involving medical devices.
Action any Medical device related alerts received from the MHRA
Actively engage with the quality management system to identify efficiencies for the site and the service.

- Professional electronics knowledge acquired through BEng in electronics, Medical Engineering or equivalent with additional practical knowledge gained through technical training, short courses and developed practical experience.
Desirable
- Physiology training to cover a range of specialist equipment
- VRCT Membership
- Internal Auditor training by a recognised certification group for ISO 9001:2015
Experience
Essential
- Analysis and diagnosing of faults in complex Electronic/Mechanical equipment.
- Experience of safe operating systems used in the maintenance and repair of complex electronic equipment.
- Self management of workload including planning for routine maintenance and prioritising of breakdown requests.
- Medical device calibration and maintenance.
Desirable
- Evidence of regular training courses to further skills and experience
