An opportunity has arisen for a suitably qualified Biomedical Scientist with HCPC registration to work within the Haematology & Transfusion Department at York Hospital. This is a full time vacancy 37.5 hours per week.

The department is fully equipped with the Sysmex XN, Sysmex CN, TOSOH G11's, and Grifols eflexis analysers. The laboratory is UKAS accredited.

It will be a contractual requirement for the successful candidate to participate in the 24/7 shift system.

Main duties of the job

  • To carry out the analysis of patient samples, quality controls (QC) and external quality assessment samples (EQA) according to departmental SOPs and departmental Quality Assurance Policy.
  • To ensure that specialist equipment within the area of work is functioning efficiently through good housekeeping, troubleshooting and preventive maintenance.
  • Technical validation of patient results.
  • Communicate effectively with clinicians, nurses and other service users on information of a technical nature.
  • To undertake shift work including evening, weekend and night work. This will involve working mostly alone and includes the provisional authorisation of results that are used for immediate patient management, carrying potentially serious consequences if any errors occur in the process.

Education/Qulifications

Essential

  • BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science course (or alternative IBMS approved qualification)
  • Registration with the HCPC via portfolio route* * Candidates with a pending HCPC-registration application may be considered


Desirable

  • Other relevant professional or vocational qualification(s) e.g. IBMS Specialist Diploma


Experience

Essential

  • Previous experience of working in a pathology laboratory environment
