The Nuclear Medicine Department at RBFT is a Physics-led clinical patient-facing service, and is part of the Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering Directorate.

We installed a new SPECT-CT scanner in 2023 and we are preparing for another new scanner in 2025.

The Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering Department is a co-Directorate alongside the Berkshire Cancer Centre with a friendly and supportive leadership team.

In the most recent NHS National Staff Survey, MPCE had the highest staff satisfaction of all the Trust Directorates.

We actively support personal development and engagement in activities such as outreach and work experience visits from students.

Main duties of the job

The main duty is to act as a nuclear medicine operator.

The team rotate through all aspects of the Department, from vetting (under protocol), dispensing, injecting, scanning and image processing. You would also be involved in equipment QA checks. There are also regular reporting sessions with the radiologists that you could become involved in.

We also do GFR tests, and some radionuclide therapies. In 2025-26 we are planning to expand the service to include Cardiac Stress Testing studies.

Team members play a part in all aspects of the Department, including looking after our patients, their appointments, queries etc., and all that is involved in working with radioactive materials, from ordering through to disposal.
