We have an opportunity for an energetic, enthusiastic and well-motivated individual to join the Molecular Diagnostics Department at the Royal Surrey Foundation Trust as a full time permanent biomedical scientist at AfC Band 6.

The Department is part of Berkshire and Surrey Pathology Services (BSPS) and provides ISO15189 accredited specialist molecular diagnostic services to six NHS Trusts as well as private healthcare facilities across the region. The department delivers a number of genetic services and specialises in the provision of services that enable cancer patients to receive personalised oncology treatments. The job advertised here is to assist in the provision these services.

We are looking for an experienced state registered biomedical scientist who is proactive in developing laboratory processes, has a keen eye for detail and works well in a team environment.

Main duties of the job

Key responsibilities will include performing and overseeing the processing of both manual and automated PCR setup as well as more complex molecular assay preparation such as sequencing and genetic signature analyses.

The post-holder will be active in the day-to-day management of laboratory processes as well as playing a significant role in the delivery and maintenance of the departmental quality management system.

Additionally the post-holder will assist in training junior staff and take responsibility for the release of patient results, appropriate to their level of training.

Job responsibilities

To assist in the provision of a Molecular diagnostics service to BSPS partner Trusts and Hospitals. To support the Laboratory Manager in the day-to-day operational aspects of the laboratory and be the first point of contact for escalation of operational issues. To maintain the highest possible standards of scientific work appropriate for a Molecular diagnostic service. To provide a senior role in the operation and delivery of specialist molecular diagnostics services. To oversee the maintenance of the laboratory quality management systems, including the delivery of a schedule of audits To promote of an ethos of continual improvement within the department. To communicate with hospital staff, other healthcare professionals and commercial suppliers in a professional manner. To operate technical, automated laboratory equipment and perform scientific techniques, as directed. To troubleshoot equipment and assays as required. To handle body fluids and materials, including high risk specimens, appropriately. To process samples and report results in accordance with departmental SOPs and as appropriate to grade. To manage the day-to-day duties of junior staff To support and advise less experienced staff, such as trainees, students and MLAs

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Biomedical sciences degree or degree in biology-based subject,
  • HCPC registration
  • Significant and proven experience in a molecular diagnostic or research laboratory environment.


Desirable

  • Completion of specialist portfolio or MSc in relevant subject


Knowledge

Essential

  • Minimum of 12 months post-registration experience as BMS
  • Significant experience/understanding of molecular techniques, including PCR and sequencing
  • Good understanding of a quality management system
  • Experience and training in the development, writing and delivery Standard Operating Procedures
  • Understanding of Health and Safety issues incl COSHH
  • Experience in training and overseeing junior staff
  • Experience in the delivery of laboratory-based projects


Desirable

  • Experienced in analysing complex data and writing associated clinical reports
