We are looking for Registered Nurses and Operating Department Practitioners (ODP's) to join our team working across the Post Op Recovery and Surgical Day case Unit in our brand new Planned Care Centre.

We want every patient to have the best possible care and support so have started an extensive re-organisation of our three sites in Leicester - the Leicester Royal Infirmary, the Leicester General Hospital and the Glenfield Hospital.

As part of that work, we've created the East Midlands Planned Care Centre, a stand alone unit on site at the Leicester General Hospital. A multi million pound investment to improve care and reduce waiting lists for the people of Leicester and beyond.

When the East Midland Planned Care Centre opens in December 2024 the building will consist of two operating Theatres, 14 outpatient rooms, four clean rooms and a surgical day case facility, together with two 18-bedded wards dedicated to elective day case / post surgical activity, as well as medical day case for Oncology, Haematology and Gastroenterology patients.

The East Midlands Planned Care Centre will see a high volume of patient's per day. It will be a fast paced environment and will require a highly motivated, adaptable candidate. They will need to have a pro active approach to their daily tasks, and must be willing to teach new members of the team their exceptional skills.

Main duties of the job

We need highly motivated practitioners to join our Recovery & Post Op team that will grow and develop over time within our new building.

Our Surgical Day case Unit is unique to UHL as it covers the patient whole surgical journey, through Admissions, Theatre, Recovery, Post Op care and Discharge. Specialties include General Surgery, Urology, Gynaecology, Ophthamology & ENT.

Recovery will deliver immediate post op airway management and care. Candidates will need existing Recovery skills or strong transferable skills with the ambition to develop to provide ongoing Post Op care.

Care continues into the Surgical Daycase Unit. Nurses/ODP's will be trained to deliver Criteria Lead Discharge. There will be a variety of shift patterns available offering multiple options of working.

Within the building is Post Op Unit, staffed days and nights to admit patients who require a short extended stay. Staff will be responsible for assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care and must be committed to delivering a high quality service to our patients.

About us

Our new strategy, developed with the support and feedback of colleagues, patients, and partners, is our compass for the next seven years (2023-2030).

We have four primary goals:
  • high-quality care for all,
  • being a great place to work,
  • partnerships for impact, and
  • research and education excellence

And we will embed health equality in all we do - taking active steps to reduce the avoidable differences in healthcare that some people face, working in partnership with communities.

Our strategy is underpinned by new values and we will work to ensure they are an everyday reality for all:
  • we are compassionate,
  • we are proud,
  • we are inclusive, and
  • we are one team

This is an exciting moment as we look to the future with clarity on what we already do well and where we need to focus our energies to make an even bigger difference for the people we serve.
