Apprentice Dietitian (development post)
Department of Nutrition & Dietetics
Apprentice fixed term contract for 38 months
Hours: 37.5 hours / week, includes study time and clinical placement release
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated and committed individual to join our Nutrition & Dietetic Team as an Apprentice Dietitian and qualify as a Registered Dietitian in 3 years.
The Dietetic Apprentice is a 3-year apprenticeship (BSc) will start in Spring 2025 and be delivered in partnership with University of Hertfordshire.
Successful completion of the apprenticeship will lead to a BSc Dietetics, and eligibility to apply for registration with the HCPC (Health and Care Professions Council).

Attend University of Hertfordshire at times during the 3 years (mostly online teaching but some travel will be required). Please note, travel costs will not be covered by MKUH

We will provide supervision and mentoring with experienced dietitians, and opportunities for gaining experience from a number of specialist dietitians working across the wider department (such as paediatrics, cancer care, learning disabilities, gastro, stroke community, mental health). We have a dedicated Therapy Practice Education team to support staff development.

Job responsibilities
At Milton Keynes University Hospital you will be joining our team of over 30 registered dietitians, dietetic support workers and admin staff, covering acute, community, paediatric and learning disability services.
You will:
Provide support to the dietetic teams in their provision of a nutrition and dietetic service to inpatients and outpatients at MKUH.Carry out supportive clinical and non-clinical duties within the department, on the wards and in outpatient / community settings.Take part in group teaching settings given to staff, patients and to the general public.Support nutrition education and training of students, ward staff, volunteers and health care professionals.Clinically assess and progress nutrition care programmes of appropriate patients.Monitor stock of equipment and ensure stock levels are maintained in the therapies department.
Clinical
To undertake assessment, treatment and discharge of appropriate patients as delegated by registered dietitian, adhering to agreed departmental guidelines & protocols once trained to do so.To assess patient understanding of dietetic plans, gain valid consent and to have the capacity to work within a legal framework with patients who lack the capacity to consent to treatment.
Personal Development
To be responsible for maintaining own competency to practice through CPD activities and to maintain a portfolio which reflects personal development.To participate in the staff appraisal scheme as an appraisee and be responsible for complying with your agreed personal development programmes to meet set knowledge and competencies.
Organisational
Liaison with and teaching of therapeutic skills to other health care professionals, students and agencies e.g. social services once trained to do so.To be responsible for planning own caseload on a daily basis to meet service and patient priorities, readjusting plans as situations arise and change once trained to do so.

- Level 3 qualification or higher in relevant subject area, for example in Allied Health Apprenticeship or equivalent level of knowledge and experience e.g. nutrition degree or 3 A-levels (1 of which must be biology or chemistry and excludes general studies)
- Evidence of a good standard of education 5 GCSE's grade C / level 4 and above or equivalent, including English and Maths
- Willingness to undertake training to meet competency framework
- Good IT skills.
- Demonstrate potential to study at degree level and commitment to completing BSc.
