Main duties of the job

To work as a skilled member of the nursing team within the Neonatal Unit and providing a high standard of holistic family integrated care.

To act as a rode model and clinical expert practitioner.

To promote family centred care and establish good relationships with babies and their families.

To communicate effectively at all levels within the multi-disciplinary team.

Work with the Community Neonatal Outreach Team to support families in preparation for discharge.

To promote a progressive attitude to the continual improvement of patient care through research and evidence based practise.

To act as a named nurse for patient care on the Neonatal Unit to Transitional Care to support families with a smooth discharge care pathway.

Ensure safe provision of care through the Neonatal Unit.

Deliver high standards of compassionate, dignified care, managing their time accurately and efficiently in cooperation of other staff members, tasks and resources.

Undertake training, assessment and facilitation of peers and staff.

Work within the boundaries of existing competence, adhering to local and national protocols / standard operating procedures.

We have a refurbished and redesigned unit and enjoy welcoming families into our spacious and calming area. We also have 5 newly refurbished parent bedrooms which are furnished to provide a non-clinical stress-free environment for our families.

About us

Our Neonatal Unit has a combination of 20 ITU, HDU and Special Care beds and is part of the Southwest Neonatal Network. We care for around 600 babies per year and look after babies born from 27 weeks gestation but will stabilise and provide intensive care for babies born earlier than this when required. We also have the ability to initiate cooling, deliver nitric oxide and Cerebral Function Monitoring for babies when needed in liaison with our tertiary centre prior to transfer if necessary. Our Community Neonatal Outreach service also provides support to babies discharged from the unit with on-going medical or nursing needs.

The Royal Cornwall Hospital is located 15 minutes from the nearest beach, making it easy to enjoy the sun and sea while working in a fantastic department. Cornwall is a beautiful county which offers an outstanding quality of life and providing many opportunities for outdoor activities, with its sailing waters, surfing beaches and rugged coastal pathways for walking, and cycling. There is a thriving arts and theatre scene as well as an interesting variety of eating places, including celebrity-owned restaurants within Cornwall. The major route both in and out of the county is the A30 which connects with the M5 motorway at Exeter. There is an excellent rail service with daily passenger and sleeper services and an airport at Newquay with daily connections to many cities throughout the UK and abroad.
