We are currently seeking a highly motivated, individual to join a busy team of dynamic dedicated Surgery Nurse.
The Surgery nurses provide pre and post operative care for case patients in an oncology setting, undergoing both general and local anaesthetic procedures. They also prepare a high turnover of patients for more major surgery.
The Unit also provides a pre-assessment service to assess Surgery patients for surgical procedures which include specialty areas such breast, urology, plastics, gynaecology, head and neck.
It is essential that the candidate is able to work using their own initiative, and to be able to work well as part of a team. You will be required to demonstrate excellent communication skills, to work under pressure and be able to provide to a high standard of care.
You must be flexible in your approach have excellent communication skills and have management experience.
A flexible approach regarding the working hours is essential as the days/hours you will be required to work during the week can vary.
Pre-assessment experience is desirable, training will be offered to the right individual.
You will need to have recent general surgical experience.Evidence of continuing professional development will be required.
Main duties of the job
1.1. To plan, document, deliver and evaluate evidence-based nursing care for patients in a responsible and efficient way, which has been drawn up in conjunction with the co-ordinator of the shift
1.2. To develop a greater awareness and understanding of the needs of patients with cancer and the different treatment modalities administered within the unit.
1.3. To develop an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of managing a shift with the guidance of the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse.

- To complete the first level assessment of the patients needs to gain an understanding of the physiological, psycho-social, spiritual and cultural needs of the patients with cancer and their families and to develop a positive, realistic and supportive attitude to ensure that the needs of the patient and family are met.
- To assist with teaching patients in preparation for investigations, treatment and home care
- To be aware of the side effects of any treatment in progress, and adopt a problem-solving approach to minimise the potentially adverse reactions.
- Be involved in the direct delivery of skilled specialised nursing care with supervision until competent, e.g. wound dressings, removal of drains, and insertion of urinary catheters.
