Working as the specialist midwife with enhanced education and training in diabetes, he/she will be best placed to provide additional support and guidance to a women and her family, when her care becomes increasingly complex as a result of diabetes. The specialist midwife will evolve the diabetic care pathway and will work in collaboration with the diabetic nurse specialist and obstetric consultants who specialise in diabetes. In this role the specialist midwife will act as an advisor to other midwives and will demonstrate an advanced level of clinical decision making and responsibility. They will provide a continuum for the diabetic population which will enhance the health of the women and their families. The specialist midwife will continue to support, advise and monitor women's health and wellbeing during her pregnancy and birth. He/she will guide the women and her family on the care of the neonate and monitor its wellbeing. The specialist midwife will build up networks within the community to which they will be able to sign post the women, enabling then to take responsibility for their future care. He/she will work closely with midwifery and obstetric colleagues to ensure that care provision for the patients in the care pathways is of high quality, clinically effective and resource efficient.

Main duties of the job

  • Expert clinical practitioner within own clinical area
  • Assesses, develops, implements and evaluates programmes of care
  • Monitors and ensures maintenance of standards of care
  • Monitors and ensures high quality of care for women and their family
  • Supervises and develops staff Participates in research and audit
  • Undertake the full role of the midwife including advanced decision making, using evidence based practice and highly developed advanced practice skills
  • Directly refer maternity users for medical investigations and for review to other health care professionals, as agreed by the lead consultant obstetrician

Education/ Qualifications

Essential

  • oRegistered Midwife currently eligible to practiceoEducated to Midwifery Degree level or evidence of significant clinical experience oEvidence of further professional development oENB 997 or equivalent oEvidence of a secondary qualification in diabetes

Knowledge & Experience

  • oSignificant experience in the role of diabetes midwife at Band 6 or band 7 oAdvanced clinical midwifery skills in diabetes oA commitment to undertake the nurse prescribing course oDemonstrate awareness of current health care legislation and innovations oDemonstrates an understanding of use of evidence in practice oUnderstanding of clinical risk management and clinical governance oArticulate and able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing oEffective presentation skills oEvidence of teaching and mentoring oEffective organisational, time management and prioritisation skills oComputer skills
