We are looking for enthusiastic newly qualified nurses seeking to join our friendly dynamic team of Paediatric Nurses in our Paediatric Assessment Unit.

The Paediatric Assessment Unit at West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospital Trusts is an area for children and young people who are acutely unwell, needing a period of observation following admission from the Children's Emergency Department, which is co-located in the Emergency Department.

We are in the process of changing the pathway for Children and Young People (C& YP) in this area, inline with the RCPCH Standards for Short Stay Paediatric Assessment Unit (2017). We plan to use the area for C& YP with acute illness, injury or other urgent referrals from clinicians, and patients can have an assessment, investigations, treatment and observation. It is a short stay unit with the expectation for either admission or discharge within 24 hours.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for a team of band 5 nurses to who are motivated to work in a fast paced, busy environment in the first phases of this developing service. You will have experience working in an acute paediatric environment and be enthusiastic in providing quality care to C& YP. You will gain experience in nursing C& YP in emergency situations.

We can also offer a range of learning and development opportunities within Children's Services and have a Paediatric Development Nurse Team to support you:o Triage and first assessmento Venepuncture and cannulationo PILS/APLSo Critical Care Development courseo Trauma Level 1o IV and Central Accesso Specialist study days such as diabetes and oncologyo Speciality Link roles to support the unit o Trust leadership and development course

The unit works closely with the Children's Emergency Department and there is the opportunity to work across both Paediatric Assessment Unit and the Children's Emergency Department for development if requested.Candidates should have a Paediatric NMC pin.

To work as a skilled member of the nursing team, to provide a high standard of holistic family centred care to the children and their families.

To act as a role model and expert clinical practitioner.

To support the senior sister in managing the clinical area, including management of staff, acting as team leader, including addressing staff developmental needs through IPR.

To undertake delegated responsibility for the department in the absence of the Ward / Unit Manager.

The post holder could be required to work on any site where HPT provide acute services for children, according to the needs of the service.

Education and qualifications

Essential

  • RSCN/RN CHILD
  • Evidence of a good command of written and spoken English
  • Evidence of professional development


Desirable

  • Knowledge of handling complaints and clinical incidents Have undertaken
  • PILS/APLs
  • Knowledge of leadership


Knowledge

Essential

  • Knowledge of Child protection issues
  • An understanding of the philosophy of paediatric care & Paediatric
  • A& E Awareness of current research and developments within paediatric nursing
  • Awareness of equality and diversity Basic knowledge of computers
