We are pleased to announce that funding has become available for several RegisteredAdult Nurses to undertake a two-year, full time Masters in Midwifery. The MSc (Hons)course is offered by Birmingham City University (BCU) and supported in placement atNorthampton General hospital (NGH). The course aims to produce competent, caring,evidence-based midwives who can support woman centred care for mothers and theirfamilies. At NGH, we are fortunate to offer a variety of practice learning environments,including home birth, birth centre and delivery suite birth settings.

Main duties of the job
The programme is 50% theory with sessions held at BCU and 50% practice-based with clinical shifts at Northampton General Hospital. Successful candidates will be able build on their knowledge as Registered Adult Nurses to develop their skills in effective communication with women, their families, and the obstetric team, providing evidence-based care through the antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal periods, under supervision of a practice supervisor.
Clinical placements will encompass community, antenatal and postnatal experiences, and labour ward/birth centre within Northampton General Hospital. Complete the Midwifery Ongoing Record of Achievement (eMORA) to ensure the necessary midwifery standards of proficiency and programme requirements are achieved within the specified timeframes in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
Whilst under the supervision of Registered Midwives, the candidate will: Communication and Relationship Skills Promote collaborative working partnerships and effective communication between all members of the multi-disciplinary team. Need to be highly skilled in communication, dealing with at times complex and sensitive information that will require the Student Midwife to adapt their communication skills to the situation and circumstances. Negotiation skills and persuasive skills along with reassuring service users throughout the childbirth continuum.

Maintain standards of recordkeeping within the practice setting, utilising accepted standards where appropriate Responsibility for Patient/Client Care Act on behalf of women, carers and staff to ensure their views are represented at all levels
Provide midwifery care to women during the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal periods in all settings including womans home, GP, Children's centres and hospital.
Planning and Organisational Skills
Effectively plan own workload for the shift prioritising different service user needs whilst following local and national guidelines.
Understand needs of the service user and forward plan future care taking in to account changing needs and risk assessment outcomes, reassessing as clinical needs determine.
Attend updates and refresher study session and mandatory study days Input information and have a working knowledge of the hospital and Maternity information systems.
Attend training and updates on implementation of Maternity Information.
System Clinical Skills
Undertake relevant clinical practices in accordance with the Scope of Professional Practice Undertake a wide range of clinical skills as listed within NMC Standards of proficiency for midwives including: Abdominal palpation examination of the newborn, vaginal examination, auscultation of the fetal heart.Conducting vaginal deliveries

Demonstrating clinical competence by the end of the programme in line with NMC code of conduct. Contribute ideas and undertake monitoring with regards to quality of women centred care.
Maintain an awareness of issues relating to midwifery on the national agenda. Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Physical Effort Registrant will be required to be physically fit to be able to undertake manual handling duties including lifting and carrying of equipment, positioning of service user during labour care and providing feeding support. Emotional and Psychological Support.
Support service users and colleagues with a wide range of complex situations including referrals to safeguarding, bereavement care, child protection and supporting families through distressing circumstances. Dealing with multiagency teams involvement for the above situations.
