The onset of stroke is now recognised as a medical emergency. Patients can now receive thrombolysis, thrombectomy and surgical intervention for haemorrhage. The Hyper Acute Stroke Unit at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford is looking for a motivated and enthusiastic Registered Nurse/AHP who has a keen interest in developing their skills and training to become an Advanced Clinical Practitioner.

The successful applicant will be supported to apply for a 3 year Masters programme in Advanced Clinical Practice at Oxford Brookes University. They will be fully supported throughout the programme and will be given 20% paid off the job learning time. They will also be supported to develop their skills as a Stroke ACP alongside the academic programme. On successful completion of the training programme, they will move to a band 8A ACP role.

The role includes clinical long day or night shifts across 7 days a week, 365 days a year. The successful applicant will be one of a team of 8 ACPs covering a 24/7 roster.

Main duties of the job

The unit specialises in the acute care and patient's ongoing rehabilitation is delivered in a different location. Our average length of stay is around 5 days.

Main Duties are:

Holding the Stroke ACP pager on every shift

Managing the stroke pathway to ensure we meet our agreed best practice and Stroke Sentinel National Audit Programme (SSNAP) targets

Liaising closely with the Emergency Department, neuro radiology, CT, MRI and vascular lab.

Completing patient assessments in ED and requesting scans as necessary.

Developing skills in assisting with mechanical thrombectomy.

Developing and delivering the 4 pillars of advanced clinical practice'

To be responsible for delivering and role modelling high standards of care within an MDT setting. In addition to the 10 Acute Stroke beds, we have 8 Hyper Acute monitored beds, taking patients directly from ED.

To support junior nurses to care for patients post thrombolysis, post mechanical thrombectomy and hemi-craniectomy.
