The Biomedical Research Centre Education and Training Officer position offers an exciting opportunity to play a key role within the core operations team at the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) at Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and UCL Institute of Ophthalmology (IoO). The role will also provide support across other key infrastructure including the NIHR Moorfields Clinical Research Facility (CRF) and Moorfields research department.

The Education and Training Officer will be responsible for driving the successful delivery of the BRC Academic Career Development strategy and provide administrative support to research capacity building initiatives. The postholder will work across the BRC partnership to coordinate and deliver agreed education and training opportunities, projects, activities and programmes, reporting progress via the BRC governance structure.

The role will require establishing excellent working relationships and partnerships with BRC Theme Leads and senior management, researchers and NHS staff This is an exciting and varied role, working with colleagues across the Moorfields and UCL IoO partnership, which would suit an individual who is organised and able to manage their time effectively.

Main duties of the job

Support the implementation of the BRC Academic Career Development strategy in the NIHR Moorfields BRC partnership.

Development of the Academic Career Development Pathway and management of specific support schemes including:

i. BRC Translational PhD Fellowships

ii. BRC Research Methodology internships

iii. BRC Career Enhancement Programme (Pre- and post-doctoral Fellowships)

Administration support related to the Clinical Academic Training programme.

Collaborating across the Moorfields/UCL infrastructure and wider partners to develop joint initiatives in education/training (e.g. partnering with existing mentorship schemes, managing the UCL Engineering summer placement scheme for Moorfields, etc.)

Provide support and deputise, where required, for the BRC Training Leads.

Develop programmes and projects with the support of the BRC and wider infrastructure training leads and coordinators.

Working with the BRC communications and events team to promote and support academic career development opportunities.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Provide support, guidance and facilitation to staff at all levels of the BRC partnership including managers, individuals and groups of staff to help implement education and training activities and initiatives to support the development of research capacity at all levels.

Work closely with internal and external providers and practitioners in the design, development and evaluation of academic career development activities.

Support BRC and CRF Joint Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Strategy in delivering any research capacity building and academic career development opportunities.

Embed organisational values and act as a driver for education and training through infrastructure initiatives. Work with BRC partner organisations as employers, ensuring that effective policies and procedures are in place and promoted.

Support the development of systems and processes to capture workforce data with regards to access to and uptake of training and education opportunities and career pathways.

Capture and report on academic career development and research capacity building initiatives for internal governance, external stakeholders and to meet NIHR contractual reporting requirements.

Review national policy/reports and requirements, and then operationalise/implement across BRC structures, reporting progress via BRC governance structures.

Promote the importance of academic development and research education in the delivery of experimental medicine across BRC partner organisations.

Person Specification

Education / Qualifications

Essential

  • oDegree level qualification or be able to demonstrate relevant and appropriate experience
  • oEvidence of ongoing continuing professional development.


Desirable

  • oQualification in project or programme management


Experience

Essential

  • oProven experience of working within a learning and development and/or training related environment.
  • oExperience of organising educational courses and academic career development opportunities.
  • oProven capability of working independently and as a part of a team


Desirable

  • oExperience of working with and influencing researchers, senior management and clinicians/ or other professional staff.
  • oPrevious experience working within an academic or NHS environment, with researchers, clinicians, and other healthcare professionals at all levels of the organisation.
  • oKnowledge and experience of handling complex relationships and partnership working across the NHS/University.

  • oEducation and training methodologies
  • oKnowledge of project management techniques and application to work


Desirable

  • oKnowledge of clinical academic career development pathways, operations, funding and terminology.
  • oAn understanding of the UK research funding landscape including experience of working with partners such as the National Institute of Health and Care Research (NIHR).
