The Hounslow Speech and Language Therapy Team are seeking an enthusiastic and innovative therapist to join as a Band 6 Specialist Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) for the Special Centres & Units Team.

You will become part of a developing service that provides high quality speech and language therapy for school aged children and young people in Reception through 18 years of age, who attend a range of specialist settings. These settings comprise of specialist centres that cater to a variety of special education needs including but not limited to Autism, Moderate Learning Disabilities, Deaf or Hard of Hearing, Visual Impairment and Speech and Language Communication Needs.

Main duties of the job

The role includes assessment, diagnosis and management of children aged 4-18 years with speech, language and communication needs in Specialist Centres attached to mainstream schools. You will be working closely as part of a multidisciplinary team, including families, peers and professionals across both health and education settings, to support children and young people across the Hounslow borough. Postgraduate training or experience in Augmentative and Alternative Communication is desirable.

Alongside a team of SLTs, you will deliver therapy, train others and help to shape a developing service while enhancing your own clinical skills. You will contribute to service specific projects and have the opportunity to develop your own ideas with the support of the Specialist Band 7s and SLT Team Leads.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Degree / diploma or other professional Speech and Language Therapy qualification
  • Registered with HCPC


Desirable

  • Registered with RCSLT
  • Demonstrates interest in a specialist clinical area
  • Membership of relevant Special Interest Group or equivalent


Experience

Essential

  • Relevant experience in working as a Speech and Language therapist with at least some experience of working within an educational setting
  • Experience of carrying out specialist assessments and intervention
  • Experience of developing implementing a Total Communication Approach
  • Experience of working within a multi-agency/disciplinary team
  • Experience training a range of professionals


Desirable

  • Experience of assessing and using low-tech and high-tech AAC


Knowledge

Essential

  • Competent computer skills
  • Ability to write clear concise reports (including contribution to the EHCP or Annual Review process).
  • Advanced knowledge of a broad range of assessment tools relevant to the client group
  • Well established knowledge of national policies and procedures (relevant to the client group/s)
  • Advanced knowledge of a range of appropriate therapeutic interventions (relevant to client group/s)
  • Well established knowledge of the principles of clinical governance/audit
