Dermatology Band 7 Skin Cancer CNS

The Dermatology service is seeking to recruit a highly motivated individual to deliver exceptional care for patients within the Skin Cancer service. The Nurse Specialist is fundamental to the service, providing bespoke nursing care for patients and their families.

You will work closely with and be supported by the existing Clinical Nurse Specialists and the medical team. The Skin Cancer CNS will be expected to work autonomously and undertake Nurse Led out-patient clinics. Including photodynamic therapy, topical treatment clinic, and pigmented lesion clinic. The Clinical Nurse Specialist will also be responsible for the delivery of diagnosis and will be expected to facilitate patient education, to enable a clear understanding of the diagnosis and assist the patient in making informed treatment decisions. Effective communication skills and sensitivity in breaking bad news is essential to this role.

Multidisciplinary team working is key, and you will work closely with the maxillofacial teams, Radiotherapy and Plastics, across the trust and affiliated hospitals. You will require a high level of understanding of each speciality.

Although working hours are generally office hours, flexibility and willingness to travel cross site is required.

As this is a unique position, we would strongly encourage an informal visit.

Main duties of the job

To work autonomously, undertaking nurse led clinics within the skin cancer service.

To attend weekly multidisciplinary team meetings, ensuring outcomes are met within an appropriate time frame.

Able to work as a safe practitioner, working within limitations and seeking appropriate expertise when required.

Independently manage and be responsible for a cohort of patients.

Support and provide teaching to junior members of the team.

Job responsibilities

The post will incorporate the Clinical Nurse Specialist role dimensions of, expert clinical practice, education, leadership, management and research.

The Clinical Nurse Specialist will be required:

To liaise with all key members of the multidisciplinary team, to advise and support colleagues in the delivery of specialised patient care across professional boundaries.

To undertake nurse led clinics and to be responsible for excellent standards of nursing care to patients through the planning, co-ordinating, delivering and evaluating nurse-led clinics.

To work autonomously to deliver specialist clinical care appropriate to the needs of the patient group and based on principles that are research based and which enhance the quality of patient care.

To contribute to the facilitation of planning, delivering and evaluating of care pathways for a designated group of patients.

To contribute to training and education within specialist area.

To promote an innovative and progressive attitude to the continual improvement of patient care, through reviewing up-to-date evidence and embedding this in practice through engagement in research activities.

To act as a visible role model and expert practitioner.

  • Substantial post-registration experience in area of speciality

  • Proven evidence of improving the patient experience.
