The Trust has invested in professional leadership and improving standards of care by making clear the nursing and quality structure across the organisation. A part of this investment is the addition of a Clinical Nurse Specialist - Safer Staffing position within the Nursing and Quality Directorate with a focus on delivering the Trusts Safer Staffing agenda.

This role will be responsible, along with the Trust Safer Staffing lead and Safer Staffing Matron for the oversight, application and improvement of Safer Staffing across all clinical services within South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be expected to work autonomously as a credible independent practitioner making key decisions with Matron and to make clinical judgements involving highly complex facts or situations, which require the analysis, interpretation and comparison of a range of options.

Applicants must have the ability to build positive and effective professional relationships, work with a range of experienced leaders and be a credible nurse in practice.

About us

South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM) provide the widest range of NHS mental health services in the UK as well as substance misuse services for people who are addicted to drugs and alcohol. We work closely with the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience (IoPPN), King's College London and are part of King's Health Partners Academic Health Sciences Centre. SLaM employ around 5000 staff and serve a local population of 1.1 million people. We have more than 230 services including inpatient wards, outpatient and community services. Currently, provide inpatient care for approximately 5,300 people each year and treat more than 45,000 patients in the community in Croydon, Lambeth, Lewisham and Southwark as well as substance misuse services for residents of Bexley, Bromley and Greenwich.

Job responsibilities

The work of the Clinical Lead will be driven by the Trust Safer Staffing Lead and overseen by the Trust Matron for Safer Staffing. The role is to support care delivery across all clinical areas to be safe, effective, and productive. This includes all non-medical clinically facing staff [both professionally registered and non-professionally registered], comprising of Registered Nurses including Nurse Associates, AHPs and non-clinical support staff.

The Clinical Lead will work within the Trust Safer Staffing team to support both the Directorates with management of their overarching safer staffing roles and responsibilities and processes and also support the Trust Executive Nursing team to exercise its duty regarding safer staffing. In particular, the delivery of the standards related to the Care Quality Commissions (CQC) regulatory framework outcome 13 staffing, the NQB 2016 Safe Sustainable and Productive Staffing expectations and the National Quality Boards (NHS England 2018) Developing Workforce Safeguards requirements.

The Clinical Lead will support the Safer Staffing team to participate in the delivery of the Trust Nursing Strategy across the Clinical Directorates in conjunction with the Executive Nursing team, Heads of Nursing and Quality, Matrons, ward and team managers and Directorate Leadership Teams, to support the delivery of a modern patient focused service

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • oNMC level 1 qualification
  • oEvidence of post registration education at degree level or equivalent.
  • oQuality Improvement qualification
  • oWorking towards an MSc in a health-related subject - as this is a developmental role
  • oAbility to complete all elements of Trust mandatory training


Desirable

  • oSpecialist qualification in Safer Staffing or Workforce at level 6/7 [i.e. BSc, PGD].


Experience

Essential

  • oExperience of autonomous working in a leadership role in a mental health setting
  • oExperience of roster and staffing management.
  • oExperience of managing and supervising staff
  • oExperience of delivering written and verbal reports to Trust Committees and external agencies
  • oExperience of clinical audit
  • oExperience of delivering training
  • oExperience of policy development
  • oCan demonstrate evidence of developing innovative practice and being a positive change agent


Desirable

  • Experience at ward/department manager level

Essential

  • oGood organisational and analytical skills.
  • oProven advanced clinical knowledge in relation to Safer Staffing
  • oDemonstrable managerial and leadership skills, including their application to Safer Staffing.

  • oExcellent presentational, communication, interpersonal and influencing skills
