An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated and enthusiastic person to join the Adult Speech and Language Service in Gateshead. We are looking for someone with excellent clinical and interpersonal skills who will work within Gateshead, providing clinical leadership to the Adult SLT team, which includes qualified, non-qualified and administration staff. The role involves accountability and responsibility for the delivery of all aspects of clinical care within the service. The service provides care throughout the community, and also to inpatients within the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Alongside the leadership role, the successful applicant will also provide clinical care to patients in a variety of settings.

As this is a community post, successful applicants must have the means and ability to travel across the whole of Gateshead independently in order to fulfil the needs of this role.

Main duties of the job

  • To line manage the Adult SLT staff and SLT administrative team including: Recruitment, Appraisal, Continuing Professional Development (CPD), Electronic Staff Record (ESR), Health Roster, Absence management, Authorisation of leave, Travel expenses and Staff performance.
  • To support theClinical Operations Manager (Children's Community Services & Adult Community Wrap Around Services) in continuous service improvements and the delivery of transformational projects within areas of accountability.
  • To share highly specialist clinical experience across all areas of the Adult SLT service, leading clinically across specialist and complex areas.
  • To provide strong clinical leadership ensuring that all clinical pathways within the Adult SLT service are safe, effective, evidence based and responsive to the changing needs of service users.
  • Embody the Trust values of Innovation, Care, Openness, Respect, Engagement (ICORE) and lead by action to inspire others within the team.

Qualifications

Essential

  • oDegree or equivalent in Speech & Language Therapy (BSc/MSc)
  • oRelevant Masters Degree or evidence of CPD and experience of working at Masters level equivalent
  • oProfessional registration HCPC
  • oAccredited NHS Leadership qualification or equivalent
  • oRCSLT dysphagia competencies to specialist level.
  • oEvidence of post graduate training/CPD in clinical area of adult neurological conditions


Desirable

  • oVFSS competencies to level 2 of the Glasgow and Clyde competency framework or equivalent
  • oFEES practitioner level 2 RCSLT competencies

Experience

Essential

  • oExperience across the full range of adult disorders
  • oExperience of working at a specialist level within a community based Adult SLT service.
  • oExperience of working within a community and acute setting
  • oExperience of leading a clinical team or coordinating a specialist area of SLT service provision within an Adult SLT service.
  • oAn understanding of the principles of clinical governance and NHS Policy Issues
  • oExperience of dealing with diffuse difficult and stressful situations
  • oExperience of multi-disciplinary and inter/agency working
  • oExperience of planning, coordinating and supervising the work of others
  • oExperience of evaluating the training needs of staff and implementing appropriate training programmes.
  • oExperience of leading service developments
  • oEvidence of advanced clinical reasoning including ability to reflect upon own performance and partake and lead in clinical supervision


Desirable

  • oExperience of carrying out triage assessment of new referrals with the full range of patients
  • oEnhanced IT skills - databases, excel, word, outlook, internet
  • oKnowledge and experience of EMIS electronic patient record
  • oExperience in change management
  • oExperience in leading audits and/or research
