An opportunity has arisen for a motivated, enthusiastic Assistant Service Manager to join our Plastic Surgery and Laser Serviceat Bedford Hospital.

This is a fixed term post for one year to assist with the day to day management of the service and also ongoing service development projects.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be expected to undertake a wide range of duties to support the management and clinical teams on a strategic and day-to-day basis. They will be instrumental in the smooth running of the administration offices, working without supervision, leading the department in its day-to-day demands within the administrative and business elements of the service.

The post holder will support work to ensure that the service is meeting all performance requirements, including quality and activity targets. They will assist with close monitoring and escalation of potential risks to delivery of key performance measures such as 18 week waits and cancer targets. They will manage the team of secretarial and administrative staff within the service, and act as a support to managers, medical and nursing staff within the service.

  • Support the service manager in managing various sections of service including arrangement of outpatient clinics and theatre lists.
  • To ensure the smooth running of the service by managing the day to day administration, and having delegated responsibility (with appropriate training and supervision) in making day to day operational decisions when necessary.
  • Problem-solve all day-to-day management issues organising and reallocating work where situations change due to variations to the workload and staffing availability.
  • Ensure effective processes and procedures are in place to monitor and track performance against agreed targets within the service.
  • Exercise delegated authority on behalf of the service manager to resolve day-to-day management issues within the services.


Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Degree level qualification in a management or business related subject, or evidence of equivalent knowledge and experience
  • Evidence of continued professional development


Desirable

  • Leadership qualification
  • ECDL


Experience

Essential

  • Experience of staff supervision and staff management
  • Knowledge of budget management issues
  • Experience of managing the delivery of an effective service


Desirable

  • Experience of working in an acute NHS Trust
  • Evidence of establishing, maintaining and consolidating effective working relationships with clinicians
