This is an exciting opportunity to join our MSK Outpatients Therapy Team at Liverpool University Teaching Hospitals Foundation Trust (LUHFT) as and Band 7 MSK OT.

We are looking for a highly skilled and dynamic clinician with significant experience and skills within MSK. The successful candidate will have a clear understanding of the role of Therapies in our MSK pathways. High level clinical reasoning, risk identification and problem-solving skills are essential.

The post holder must demonstrate the ability to lead the team delivering an innovative and responsive service to meet the needs of our patients and the organisation. The post holder will have significant experience in working with adults with complex presentations and will demonstrate confidence in managing a varied workload at pace. The role requires excellent communication skills and the ability to work as an effective member of a team. You will be responsible for the supervision of junior staff and service development.

We have excellent links to our Orthopaedic services and we work in an open learning culture. LUHFT has teams of experienced and highly skilled staff. We are committed to CPD through training, regular supervision, appraisal, and personalised development plans. Staff are required to work flexibly. This may include supporting seven-day services and shift patterns over an extended working day. We currently offer MSK OT services at two hospital sites.

Clinical

1.1 To undertake assessment of patients including those with diverse or complex presentations/multiple pathologies using advanced clinical reasoning skills and manual assessment techniques to clinically diagnose1.2Implement evidence based treatment plans with regards to physical, cognitive, perceptual, psychological and social functioning.1.3Deliver and evaluate treatment programmes according to health care needs using a comprehensive range of treatment options.1.4To manage waiting lists and prioritise referrals with own team.October 20241.5To advise, assist and educate Occupational Therapists on the management of clinically complex patients.1.6To take part in acute intervention Weekend Working (optional).1.7To carry out home assessments within the patients usual place of residence. Liaising with family, carers, multidisciplinary team and support teams within the community.1.8To make recommendations based on Occupational Therapy clinical reasoning, problem solving and risk assessment in order to maintain the patients functional abilities and quality of life within the community.1.9To liaise with statutory and voluntary agencies external to the Trust, regarding social care and housing. To provide equipment, recommend and arrange home adaptations to support independent living skills completing necessary documentation.1.10To ensure a high standard of patient care is provided, implementing and reviewing clinical standards relevant to the work undertaken.1.11To be responsible for training and supporting Therapy staff whos case load includes patients with scar management and pressure garments needs.1.12To work closely with other members of the Clinical Team to develop a co-ordinated Multidisciplinary Service and actively participate in the scheduled Team Meetings as required.1.13To ensure effective communication with patients, carers and all other Health & Social Care Professionals regarding all aspects of patient care. This will include patients who will have difficulties in understanding and communication.1.14To provide and receive complex information that requires empathy and reassurance, communicating where there may be barriers to understanding.1.15To attend Orthopaedic and Rheumatology clinics working with the Consultants, advising, treating and triaging as required.1.16To attend any other clinic relevant to the delivery of an effective musculo-skeletal service.

Clinical Governance

2.1 To comply with the Health & Safety Policies of the Trust including attendance at Mandatory Training as specified by the Trust.2.2To comply with and contribute to the development of departmental procedures and guidelines.2.3To ensure that all accidents, incidents and hazards are dealt with effectively and reported accordingly to Trust requirements.2.4To comply with the College of Occupational Therapy standards and rules of professional conduct.2.5To be responsible for maintaining accurate and comprehensive patient treatment records in line with Trust and Departmental Standards of Practice.2.6To develop and undertake Clinical Audit.2.7To ensure treatments offered to patients are based on the best available clinical evidence.2.8To gain valid informed consent in line with Trust & Departmental Policy.2.9To comply with the Data Protection Act and Caldicott recommendations.2.10To be responsible for managing clinical risk within the teams

Training & Development

3.1 To be responsible for maintaining own competency to practice through CPD activities and maintain a portfolio which reflects personal development.3.2Maintain and develop current knowledge of evidence-based practice within own area of work, developing high level knowledge of particular conditions and patient types.3.3To participate in relevant In-Service Training Programmes developed for the Musculo-skeletal Team.3.4To organise, lead and participate in In-Service Training programmes for the Occupational Therapy Team in the Musculo-skeletal Service.3.5To attend relevant advanced post grad. courses and conferences disseminating information from training attended as required3.6Complete annual appraisals and Personal Development Plans for self and staff assigned to your service /team.3.7To facilitate regular supervision and mentoring sessions of Occupational Therapists.3.8To teach and advise carers and other Health Professionals to ensure provision of good patient care.3.9To lead in supervision of students on clinical placement in the role of Clinical Educator.

Managerial & Leadership

4.1 To assist in the supervision of Occupational Therapists, Students and Assistants within the Musculoskeletal Service.4.2To provide the Clinical Occupational Therapy Specialist/Managers with relevant information for the planning and development of the unit.4.3To work within all Musculoskeletal OT Teams to provide staff cover, in times of annual leave/sickness etc while maintaining own clinical responsibilities.4.4To assist the Managers in achieving the departmental objectives and promoting an open style of management.4.5To participate in the professional development programme of the Occupational Therapy Department.4.6Co-ordinate the effective day to day running of own service and ensure effective dissemination of information.4.7To participate in the recruitment and selection of therapy staff under the guidance of Therapy Manager

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • B.Sc. in Occupational Therapy or Grad.Diploma in Occupational Therapy
  • HCPC registration

  • Evidence of CPD


Experience

  • Significant post registration experience
  • Demonstrable broad based in musculo-skeletal areas: outpatients / orthopaedic inpatients / rheumatology
  • Experience in supervision and training of juniors, assistants and students.
  • Experience of orthotics

  • Experience of wound care and scar management.

  • Evidence of service development and implementing change.
