The Teenage Cancer Trust Unit (TCTU) is a 9 bedded ward, set within the Oak Centre for Children and Young People, at the Royal Marsden Hospital in Sutton. We are one of the largest Children's Cancer Centres in Europe, offering comprehensive and cutting-edge treatment. The Royal Marsden has one of the largest UK Bone Marrow Transplant Units, the largest Paediatric Inpatient Drug Development Programme in the UK and is recognised as a world leader in the field. On the TCTU, we care for a wide range of Haematology and Oncology Cancers, including Bone Marrow Transplants.

The Oak Centre has been designed around the needs of our patients and their families. We work closely with our colleagues in the multidisciplinary team and together our objective is to ensure that Children and Young People receive the highest quality of care.

Working at the Royal Marsden will provide you with many opportunities, both academic and clinical. As a newly qualified nurse, our 12 month preceptorship programme ensures you are supported and will give you guidance on how to develop the confidence, knowledge and skills required for you to excel in your role. If you are new to Cancer, our programmes such as 'Nurses New to Cancer Care', 'Cytotoxic Administration' and 'Foundation Oncology Skills' will help build on the experience you have already gained in your nursing career to date.

Main duties of the job

  • To plan, document, deliver and evaluate evidence-based nursing care for patients in a responsibleand efficient way, which has been drawn up in conjunction with the co-ordinator of the shift
  • To develop a greater awareness and understanding of the needs of patients with cancer and thedifferent treatment modalities administered within the unit.
  • To develop an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of managing a shift with the guidance of the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse

  • To be aware of the side effects of any treatment in progress, and adopt a problem-solving approach to minimise the potentially adverse reactions.
  • To participate in educational programmes offered to staff. To attend the induction programme, mandatory training, and teaching specific to the clinical area
  • To participate in an annual collaborative appraisal process to enable achievement of objectives and management of learning needs.
  • To assist with any local or Trust initiatives to ensure the continuous improvement of the quality of services and safeguarding of high standards of care

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Registration
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development


Desirable

  • Qualification in oncology or speciality
  • Diploma or Degree level study (or equivalent)
  • Recognised teaching qualification


Experience

Essential

  • Experience in intravenous drug administration
  • Sufficient post registration nursing experience in oncology or speciality to be confident and competent in using the required skills to do the job


Desirable

  • Experience in chemotherapy administration
  • Experience in Clinical Management
  • Evidence of relevant teaching experience
  • Knowledge and understanding of clinical trials management


Skills

Desirable

  • Venepuncture and/or cannulation skills
  • Evidence of effective negotiating and influencing skills
  • Ability to lead a team
