The Royal Marsden Hospital is Europe's largest oncology centre with sites in Chelsea, Sutton, and Cavendish Square (central London). The diagnostic imaging service provides an essential service to the trust and includes CT, MRI, mammography, ultrasound as well as a general x-ray and interventional radiology service.

Due to the expansion of services, we are currently inviting applications from enthusiastic individuals for a full-time band 7 sonographer post to be based on the Chelsea site (with rotation to the Sutton site when required). The postholder must hold at least a UK postgraduate certificate in general ultrasound (or equivalent qualification). The post holder will work autonomously, performing high quality imaging and issuing reports on all ultrasound examinations including abdominal, gynaecology (including TA and TV), vascular (for DVT), and small parts (including testes and neck/thyroid desirable).

Main duties of the job

The post holder will have registration BSc in radiography or equivalent, must be HPC state registered , if a radiographer, and must hold a post graduate Ultrasound qualification related to general ultrasound. The post holder should have worked as an advanced US practitioner in general ultrasound imaging. The post holder will perform and issue a report on all ultrasound examinations including abdominal, , vascular, small parts providing highly advanced clinical skills and opinion and diagnosis for patient centred care.

The post holder will provide and facilitate an expert level of care to patients presenting with or who are at risk of pathology, including the assessment and diagnosis of patients. They will exercise the highest degree of professional autonomy, working as an advance practitioner in the decision making process that will improve overall patient outcomes. They will support the lead Ultrasonographer and Radiology Service Manager in developing the ultrasound service in line with best practice and national imperatives.

The post holder must be a member of the society of Radiographers and adhere to the HPC and Society of Radiographer's code of conduct, local trust policies, protocols and guidelines and be actively involved in US clinical supervision.

  • Provide and facilitate an expert level of care to patients presenting with or who are at risk of any disease ,including the assessment and diagnosis of patients.
  • Exercise a high degree of personal and professional autonomy, acting as a advanced practitioner demonstrating advanced clinical competence, decision making and a knowledge base significantly beyond those associated with conventional radiographer/ultrasonographer roles.
  • Work in collaboration with the multi disciplinary team and actively involve users of the service to gain their input to the service development to ensure continuous improvements in patient care.
  • Support the MDT in delivering patient care ensuring sound clinical and ethical decision making in relation to diagnosis.


Person Specification

Education/Qualifications

Essential

  • DCR or Equivalent Diploma
  • PGDip in general US
  • Appropriate HCPC state registration


Experience

Essential

  • 4 years post graduate experience
  • 2 years general ultrasound experience


Desirable

  • Oncological US experience
