Ealing Speech and Language Therapy department is a passionate and motivated team who strive to provide services of high quality to the diverse population of the London Borough of Ealing.

We are seeking an enthusiastic, flexible and innovative therapist/s to work with students aged 0-18 years with a specialist interest in working with children with speech language and swallowing needs as part of our Early Years and Special Schools Teams. This is a developing SLT Eating Drinking and Swallowing (EDS) post.

The successful candidate/s will be supported to continue their development of EDS competencies by in-house training/ supervision and shadowing to develop their knowledge, skills and experience in working with children with dysphagia.

Main duties of the job

We have a 0.8 wte working 30 hours a week fixed term sessions available

This post/s involves:-
  • To develop skills in the assessment, diagnosis and management of a designated specialist caseload of children with communication / eating, drinking and swallowing disorders with support for specific cases.
  • To contribute to the Education Health and Care planning process. This will include assessment of the child's needs as well as reviewing recommendations / packages of care with in EHCPs.
  • To develop the ability to cater for children in the community, attending a specialist nursery or special school with a range of communication needs, including Profound and Multiple learning disabilities, Severe Learning Disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorder and Dysphagia
  • To develop knowledge in dysphagia underpinned by current evidence-based practice.
  • To work together with parents/carers and other professionals to implement a range Universal, Targeted and Specialist provisions for children aged 0-18 years.
  • To demonstrate a working knowledge of the National curriculum and SEN processes in the context of speech and language therapy.
  • To reflect on practice with peers and identify strengths and needs.
  • To show evidence of sound clinical judgement, evidence-based practice and outcome measures.


About us

As with most services, the current COVID pandemic has meant changes to the way we work. We continue to follow the guidance given regarding safe working. At present, the role involves a combination of visits to schools across the borough and admin time at the main hub. There is scope for flexible working including working from home.

Job description Job responsibilities

  • To manage a complex and specialist caseload independently demonstrating evidence of sound clinical judgement and outcome measurement with access to support and supervision as necessary.
  • To demonstrate specialist knowledge in clinical specialism underpinned by current evidence based practice.
  • To reflect on practice with peers and identify strengths and needs.
  • To demonstrate evidence of specialist clinical judgement, evidence based practice and outcome measures.
  • To participate in the appropriate specialism groups.
  • To provide support and supervision for junior team members as directed by Team Leader.
  • To provide specialist second opinions, advice and training to less experienced/ junior colleagues and/or other professionals in the field.
  • To write appropriate reports and case notes, reflecting specialist knowledge.
  • To communicate verbally and in writing with parent/ carer/ client assessment findings, diagnosis and therapy intervention plan reflecting specialist knowledge. This may include breaking bad news in a sensitive manner.
  • To negotiate with parents/clients/other professionals around case management and to recognise potential breakdown and conflict when it occurs and take steps to resolve.
  • To deal with initial complaints sensitively, avoiding escalation where possible and know when and how to seek support.
  • To attend and contribute to relevant Speech and Language Therapy Team meetings and participate in team projects.


Person Specification Education/ Qualifications Essential
  • 1.Registration with Health Professions Council as a speech and language therapist
  • 2.Recognised Speech and Language Therapy degree qualification or equivalent
  • 3.Registered member of RCSLT
  • 4. At substantial year continuous experience of managing EDS needs in community
  • 5. Experience of supporting CYP with complex SLC needs
Desirable
  • oMembership to appropriate CEN
Knowledge & Experience Essential
  • o Knowledge of prioritisation issues within client group
  • o Knowledge of national policies and procedures relevant to the client group
  • o Knowledge of principles of clinical governance
  • oPostgraduate experience of assessing, diagnosing and implementing appropriate management plans for children with a wide range of speech, language communication and eating drinking and swallowing difficulties, including those relevant to the clinical specialism
  • oSpecialist knowledge of assessment tools relevant to the client group
  • oSpecialist knowledge of a range of appropriate educational and therapeutic interventions effective for working in education and in the community
  • oEvidence of continuing professional development and advanced training, e.g. attention autism, Makaton, PECS
Desirable
  • oAttendance at relevant Dysphagia courses/ CEN's or study days
