An exciting opportunity has arisen within our dynamic and established team of Children's Complex Needs Specialists, for an Epilepsy Nurse.

Ideally, you will be a Nurse Prescriber or be prepared to work towards the qualification. The successful applicant will forge strong working relationships with key hospital and community practitioners. The post would also involve playing a key role in patient pathway developments.

You will have substantial clinical experience working with epilepsy. As well having a strong sense of independent practice, you will also be an excellent multi-disciplinary team player.

You will be working as a Specialist Nurse within the Complex Needs Nursing Team and you will be embedded within the team. The role will compromise of 3 days per week Epilepsy and 2 days working within the specialist nursing team. The Complex Needs team offer end of life on-call support which the post holder will be expected to support.

Main duties of the job

CNWL are proposing to offer a he post holder will have the responsibility for providing high quality, evidence-based specialist nursing skills, knowledge and expertise in the care and management of a defined caseload of children & young people with epilepsy, based in the complex Needs Nursing Team to carry out clinical assessment of children & young people's needs, care plans and implement packages of care accordingly, whilst supporting the child, family, and carer holistically, in response to their specific needs, maximizing their independence and quality of life, acknowledging the specific cultural needs of children and families and ensures that care is delivered in a way that is sensitive to such needs.

Please note this post is based at Milton Keynes Headquarters which is currently situated on the hospital site. However a consultation is currently underway with staff regarding moving the Headquarters to the Open University within Milton Keynes in the new year. If this moves goes ahead as proposed the successful candidate would be based at the Open University site.

Job description

Job responsibilities

To facilitate, support and coordinate with Children with Epilepsy, with complex physical or life limiting conditions, registered with a Milton Keynes GP. This will be achieved by both face to face contacts with the young person, their family and the coordination of and collaboration with the Multi-Disciplinary Teams.
  • Paediatric Epilepsy Nurse Specialist Key Duties
  • Provide home visits and telephone advice for epilepsy patients
  • Provide school and nursery visits for epilepsy patients accessing epilepsy services.
  • Attend weekly epilepsy clinics for multidisciplinary case discussions.
  • Support, coordinate and attend epilepsy transition clinics.
  • Undertake Paediatric Epilepsy Nurse Specialist led clinics
  • Promote communication and enhance partnership working across Health, Hospice, Social Care, Education and voluntary sector service provisions.
  • To provide clinical expertise on complex health care matters to young people, their families and multi-disciplinary/multi-agency teams.
  • To take the leading developing the Epilepsy care planning and passports for children and their families.
  • To ensure that the service meets the needs of children with epilepsy in the Milton Keynes borough.
  • To compliment current service provision of Complex Needs Childrens Community Nursing Team
  • To ensure that safeguarding children and safeguarding vulnerable adult principles are adhered to at all times throughout the transition process for all young people and are reflected in pathway and service development.

Essential

  • oHold a full, valid, UK driving licence and have access to a car to use for business purposes (unless you have a disability as defined by the Equality Act 2010)


Qualifications

Essential

  • oNMC Registered Children's Nurse
  • oDegree/Diploma in relevant subject or equivalent qualification or experience.
  • oEvidence of Continuing Professional Development


Desirable

  • oDual Registration in Adult & Children's Nursing or experience of working in both children's and adult services
  • oTeaching and Accessing Qualification


Experience

Essential

  • oKnowledge and skills in the management of long-term conditions and complex needs
  • oExperience of assessing for continuing care, adult and/or children's
  • oKnowledge and experience of collaborative Multi Agency work
  • oKnowledge and experience of teaching and assessing young people, parents and staff
  • oKnowledge and experience in Community Nursing
  • oComputer skills including email, internet and office applications
  • oExperience of giving sensitive/difficult information to families
  • oSound knowledge of Safeguarding children and vulnerable adults


Desirable

  • oExperience of advanced care planning.
  • oExperience of End of Life Care
  • oEvidence of project management working
