The post holder will be responsible for the operational management and development of the clinical services across Specialist Palliative Care. The post holders' own practice will be at an advanced level to act as an expert resource for the above teams and other health care professionals on issuesrelating to Palliative & End of Life Care and provide clinical and managerial leadership of highly specialist nurses providing Palliative & End of Life Care of the highest quality. To lead as a visible clinical role model that can provide inspiration and direction and provide professional advice. The Deputy Head of Nursing for Specialist Palliative Care implement or introduce innovative practice and develop effective problem-solving skills. Together with the Head of Nursing for Specialist Care, the post holder will take responsibility for the quality management of the service. The post holder will participate in activity to ensure the Trust's quality, performance and finance targets are met and divisional objectives are delivered. The post holder will act in such a manner that upholds the values of the Trust and that of the MDTensuring that service delivered contributes to support the principles of clinical governance. To provide appropriate support and advice in relation to the application in practice of the Trust's policies and procedures in particular discipline and grievance, sickness absence monitoring,recruitment, and selection of staff.
Main duties of the job
Provide and facilitate an expert level of advanced care to patients with palliative & end of life care needs, acting as an accountable role model through the demonstration of evidence based practice.Utilise advanced clinical reasoning skills and evidence-based knowledge in the management of patients with highly complex presentations.Participate in the development of clinical expertise to develop advanced assessment and decision-making skills for the specialist palliative care nursing teams.Act as a point of liaison for multi-disciplinary and multi-agency working to achieve the best possible outcome for patient care. Will take appropriate action to remedy any deficiencies in service provision.Provide strong clinical leadership, be a visible member of the team undertaking clinical shifts where appropriate and support to clinical teams.Ensure effective use of advanced clinical knowledge and skills, relating to the speciality to enhance patient care delivery.Work collaboratively with other professionals and agencies (statutory & voluntary) to ensurepatient needs are met, especially in relation to on-going care needs and discharge arrangements.Lead on the development of Trust wide guidelines for the appropriate management of patients with specialist and core level palliative care needs.Provide leadership over a 7-day period in times of operational need.

To operationally manage and support the Acute, Community Specialist Palliative Care CNS Teams and the Palliative Care Support Team including responsibility for staff appraisal, professional development review and recruitment & retention.To provide clinical and managerial leadership within their areas of responsibility, developing and strengthening and supporting the role of Team Leaders and CNSs.To investigate accidents, incidents and complaints, implementing corrective actions where necessary, in consultation with the divisional management team in accordance with trust policies.To influence patient care through clinical practice, management, leadership, education,research, audit and professional activities.Responsible for the management of Acute & Community Palliative Care CNS teams and Palliative Care Support Team for issues of discipline and grievance, sickness absence and recruitment and selection, departmental workload & allocation.Responsible for proposing and implementing policy changes which will impact on service delivery within the service and have responsibility to overcome and barriers to acceptance and implementation.To act as a resource and implement higher-level action in relation to all the Trust's policies and procedures.Initiate and implement service improvement using Quality Improvement approach including the development of annual reports for all services that contributes to service planning and strategic management.Ensure all staff participates in the Individual Performance and Development Review in line with Trust Policy.In collaboration with the senior team, monitor the provision of care through review and audit of patients' experiences using complaints management system, Patient Relations Service and local national patients' satisfaction surveys. Incorporates these findings into service improvement plans and reports findings of such surveys and trend monitoring across theTrust.To contribute to the development of robust business cases in order to deliver short and long term business strategies.Managing the budget for the identified area(s), ensuring capital and equipment resourceswithin the clinical area are used to provide an efficient, effective and high-quality service.
