We are looking for a skilled, highly motivated Pharmacy Technician to come and work with us.

You will oversee the use of all high cost medicine use within University Hospitals Leicester & TrustMed Pharmacy and be responsible for the accurate capture of data and reporting to external commissioners to ensure appropriate reimbursement for spend.

Main duties of the job

To be responsible for ensuring accurate capture of the details of the issuing of all high cost therapies within UHL.

To improve the utilisation of high cost medicines including associated rebate schemes to ensure maximum potential cost savings.

Be responsible for reporting high cost therapies to UHL finance and outside sources such as NHS England, and the Cancer Drug Fund.

To support and provide leadership to all specialist pharmacy services (high cost therapies, unlicensed medicines, and procurement).

To identify and support the implementation of CIP schemes and savings monitor and report at regular intervals.

Assist the Principal Pharmacy Technician in maintaining pharmacy computer systems.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Assists the Principal Pharmacy Technician in recruiting, training and line managing procurement and specialist services teams to ensure that staff skills and experience are sufficient to meet service objectives.

To maintain and develop individual computer systems and written guidelines for ordering, dispensing and reclaiming High Cost Drugs. Ensure the supply of medication to an individual patient is available where possible to avoid delays in therapy and to enable effective communication and coordination with medical, nursing and pharmacy staff.

To ensure medicine costs are appropriately charged through accurate and timely monthly reconciliation. (For example Cancer Drug Fund and Patient Access Schemes)

To lead or participate in high cost drug audits including drug reclaim schemes or other forms of research and development

Assists the Chief Technician for Procurement in managing the purchasing of all pharmaceuticals for the Leicester hospitals, in accordance with local procedures and contracts. Ensures all pharmaceuticals are obtained in a timely manner from appropriate sources which provide timely delivery, acceptable quality and lowest achievable prices.

Assists the Chief Technician for Procurement in sourcing unusual drugs and managing drug shortages or supply problems by sourcing acceptable alternatives to unavailable items to maintain the services to patients provided by Pharmacy.

To identify and support the implementation of CIP schemes.

Develops, implements and maintains systems for purchasing of pharmaceuticals in line with the strategy and objectives for the department.

Deputy attendance required for Quality & Safety meetings, Pharmacy Improvement Board, and Health & Safety meetings.

Assist the Principal Pharmacy Technician in the usage of and update and maintenance of pharmacy computer systems (JAC, Define, etc.) Share expert IT knowledge and advice with pharmacy staff.

Person Specification

Training

Essential

  • GPhC registered Pharmacy Technician


Desirable

  • Leadership/management course e.g. ILM level 2/3 Insights training


Experience

Essential

  • Accredited technician checker
  • Extensive post qualification experience of which a significant portion must have been in hospital sector.
  • Managing sickness absence and appraisal according to Trust policies
  • Good IT skills including knowledge JAC and Excel


Desirable

  • Experience of setting objectives and managing performance
  • Understanding of NHS funding streams and experience of financial monitoring and forecasting


Communication & relationships

Essential

  • Ability to work as team member and work alone as required Good written and verbal communication
  • Good negotiating skills. Leadership. Multidisciplinary team working. Ability to motivate and influence change within teams


Desirable

  • Able to communicate well both one to one and to a group of people (public speaking)

  • Able to analyse and interpret information where there are a range of facts requiring analysis and where a range of options need to be compared.

  • Understand the principles of service development and management of change Problem solving skills. Ability to delegate workload appropriately.

  • Experience of monitoring standards of service and influencing others to maintain or improve performance


Other requirements

Essential

  • Awareness and understanding of pharmacy issues within the changing NHS


Desirable

  • Knowledge of the hospital pharmaceutical contracting processes and of the UK Pharmaceutical market, the supply chain, and procurement practice.
