This is an exciting opportunity to join the Microbiology team at Coventry and Warwickshire Pathology Services (CWPS) based at UHCW NHS Trust as a specialist Biomedical Scientist. We serve the communities of Coventry and Warwickshire and have Pathology Departments across University Hospital, Coventry George Eliot Hospital Warwick Hospital and St Cross Hospital, Rugby.

The Microbiology laboratory department is located at UHCW and performs testing, reporting and clinical advice services for all Hospitals. Microbiology is currently out to tender for full laboratory automation and a significant upgrade in equipment throughout the laboratory therefore you would have the opportunity to be involved in the implementation of this into the routine diagnostic service. The successful applicant will be given the opportunity to expand their operational and leadership experience.

The successful candidate will have completed the specialist portfolio in Microbiology or equivalent IBMS Microbiology qualification. We offer the opportunity to participate in the on-going transformation of the service and encourage staff to bring forward ideas for improvement. If taken on as a trainee specialist biomedical scientist this role will be paid as a band 5 until such time that the specialist portfolio has been completed.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be required to work within a 7-day shift system (including weekends, shifts time 08:00-16:00 and late 13:00-21:00) and be required to contribute to the on-call service (21:00-08:00).
  • Daily perform routine and specialised diagnostic services on patient or environmental samples containing potentially infectious material
  • To carry out routine maintenance on analytical equipment as required and in accordance with standard operating procedures
  • To carry out equipment and method troubleshooting, advise the Section Manager of situations requiring further action, work with service engineers on fault resolution
  • To prepare, store and use reagents required for laboratory investigations
  • To perform manual, semi-automated and fully-automated laboratory investigations to exacting medical and scientific standards according to Standard Operating Procedures
  • Interpretation of diagnostic investigations and be responsible for the validity of results and ensure accuracy and precision as specified by laboratory protocols and procedures

  • If taken on as a trainee this will be payable as a band 5 until completion of the specialist portfolio

    Job responsibilities

    Main responsibilities are:
    • To report to the Section Manager any instance or event which may cause a service delivery failure, but be fully involved in the resolution of such events
    • To develop and investigate new techniques or analysers as required by the changing needs of the service
    • To ensure that all results are reported within the agreed turnaround time and to take remedial action, for example communicating appropriately with colleagues and managers
    • Work to meet laboratory performance targets as directed by senior staff
    • To use departmental resources efficiently and ensure reagents and consumables are ordered when approaching minimum stock levels
    • To participate in the review and update of Standard Operating Procedures and health and safety documentation including COSHH and workplace risk assessments by commenting or proposing changes.
    • To comply with the policies and procedures of University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust.

    The post holder will be responsible for the supervision of department section areas, undertake more specialised tasks including new test validation, audit review, ordering of laboratory consumables and supplies, and assessment of quality documentation to ISO 15189 standard.

    Successful candidates will be both patient and quality focused, innovative and professionally motivated, to help promote and progress CWPS services. They must be confident and adaptive with the ongoing changes and be willing to work flexibly within a demanding yet rewarding environment.
