This is an exciting time to join our team at the beginning of developing our new specialist Nutrition Team service - as a nutrition specialist nurse you will be an integral part of the team working alongside a dietitian ACP, pharmacist and lead consultant for nutrition. The successful post holder will provide specialist nursing expertise and knowledge to support the treatment of patients requiring complex nutritional support under the Nutrition Team caseload.

Working as an autonomous practitioner alongside the MDT, with patients receiving artificial nutrition, both enteral and parenteral - you will promote best practice, identify, and provide training to other health care professionals, patients and will also support the strategic delivery of the new nutrition service, being professionally line managed within the surgical gastroenterology nursing team.

Applicants with the passion and previous experience requiring further development would be considered as a Band 6 initially within a development role to progress to Band 7 when competencies are met. If you are passionate about enhancing nutritional care for all patients and shaping this new service from the beginning, then this is the role for you.

Main duties of the job

As well as being a clinical lead for nutritional treatment you will be involved in nutrition policy writing and audit, development, and delivery of nutrition training programmes, represent at the nutrition and hydration steering groups and lead on quality and service improvement projects, working towards optimising patient flow, safety and nutrition care standards for all patients. You will link with other nutrition nurse services within the NCA for aligning of practice and peer support. You will need to demonstrate a high level of professionalism and knowledge demanded by this grade, have several years post registration experience in a medical or surgical setting and demonstrate leadership, advanced communication skills and engagement in leading change.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Current NMC registration
  • Intravenous accreditation
  • Recognised teaching qualification and evidence of ability to provide education in a clinical/educational setting


Desirable

  • BSc Nursing or working towards
  • Evidence of post registration education in nutrition


Knowledge, Training & Experience

Essential

  • Post qualification Nursing experience
  • Relevant enteral and parenteral nutrition experience
  • Advanced theoretical knowledge of nutrition support and practical application in clinical practice
  • Experience of inserting NG tubes
  • Experience managing NG and PEG tubes
  • Able to perform assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care


Skills & Abilities

  • Has initiated service development and the implementation of change
  • Able to advise on and implement improvements to the quality and efficacy of care for patients requiring artificial nutrition support
