An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, independent, JAG accredited clinical endoscopist to join the endoscopy team at the James Paget University Hospital. Working in our four room endoscopy unit, you will ensure endoscopy is delivered in line with best practice with an excellent patient experience at the heart of what we do. The post holder will be joining a well-established team of clinical endoscopists, supported by skilled Gastroenterologists and Surgeons.
The post holder will provide a clinical role in the endoscopy service for patients who are undergoing assessment and investigation for gastrointestinal disease. They will perform diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures and follow agreed protocols. The role requires flexibility between clinical and administrative sessions.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will be JAG accredited in colonoscopy and will meet the recommended quality and safety standards. The individual needs to be able to demonstrate the ability to work autonomously under pressure and manage the mental and emotional demands of a role that requires periods of heightened concentration.
A keen desire and self-motivation to develop the role of the clinical endoscopist is essential. The role will have both clinical, managerial and leadership components and displaying dexterity for juggling roles and responsibilities is fundamental.

1. To work as an independent, JAG accredited, Advanced Clinical Endoscopist undertaking endoscopy procedures with an awareness of the associated responsibilities
2. Demonstrate the ability to work autonomously and be accountable for own actions
3. Act on professional judgement about when to seek help, demonstrating critical reflection on own practice, self-awareness, emotional intelligence, and openness to change
4. Demonstrate knowledge of GI disorders through analysing and interpreting the care needs of patients with gastrointestinal symptoms.
5. Provide professional leadership and accountability by personal example to ensure the delivery of a high quality, patient centred service across Endoscopy
6. Assess medical and psychological suitability of patients who are referred for endoscopic investigations to include social, physical and emotional factors.
7. Perform advanced and specialised clinical skills in assessment, diagnosis and treatment of Endoscopy patients to enhance the patient/carer experience.
8. Decide on the best course of treatment from the visual assessment of the Gastrointestinal (GI) tract and whether to take biopsies/ perform therapeutic procedures such as polypectomy.
9. Exercise professional judgement to manage risk appropriately
10. To demonstrate performance within the parameters of the National KPIs for each accredited endoscopy modality, maintaining clinical competence and credibility

- Clinical decision making skills in GI/colorectal disease management
- Knowledge of national standards that inform practice (e.g. National Service Frameworks, NICE/BSG guidelines etc)
- Understanding of JAG (Joint Advisory Group) accreditation standards for endoscopy services
Desirable
- Evidence of involvement in the training and development of staff
Education and qualifications
Essential
- JAG accredited Endoscopist in at least one modality
- Masters modules relevant to role e.g. HEE Clinical Endoscopist course
- Significant Experience as a Clinical Endoscopist at band 7

- Mentorship or other formal teaching qualification
- Experience of writing policies, protocols and guidelines

- Registered healthcare professional (NMC adult nurse, registered health and care professions council (HCPC) registered)
