An excellent and exciting opportunity has arisen for an Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) within the Neurology service within The James Cook University Hospital.

The post holder will be working autonomously as an Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) and will work under direct or indirect supervision of senior medical colleagues, at an advanced clinical level in the direct delivery of high-quality care making critical clinical decisions based on advanced clinical skills assessment.

Evidencing across all four pillars of advanced clinical practice as set out by Health Education England (2017). The post holder will provide clinical leadership and support within the nursing/AHP teams in developing the service to improve the patient experience, supporting Consultants with day-to-day clinical activity (to be determined according to need of specialist area).

This post can be appointed as a training post, there is an expectation that the post holder will undergo all relevant training to reach qualification as an ACP.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will demonstrate the knowledge and skills of a competent practitioner and will:
  • Manage the clinical care for patients with neurological conditions
  • Undertake comprehensive physical and mental health assessments, analysing differential diagnoses and decide on the appropriate treatment based on clinical findings
  • Prescribe medication as appropriate, order investigations, refer to other professionals for tests or examinations and admit or discharge autonomously within the scope of agreed clinical guidelines.
  • Deliver therapeutic Botox for the treatment of neurological conditions
  • Perform Lumber Punctures on a semi-urgent and elective patients
  • Provide support and supervision to the Neurology Day Unit on a day to day basis.

There may be times when the Trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioner may be asked to support clinical delivery in other clinical areas within the directorate.

Qualifications Band 8

Essential

  • Registered Healthcare Practitioner
  • Completed portfolio of professional development which evidences an advanced level of clinical practice in line with HEE (2017) framework for ACP
  • MSc in advanced Clinical Practice/Royal college credentialed/ HEE accredited ACP
  • Independent Non-medical prescriber or willing to undertake (if legally permitted)
  • ILS/ALS provider (appropriate to role/setting or dependent on clinical area)
  • Formal research module completed at level 7 (master's level)


Desirable

  • ALS provider/ instructor


Knoweldge

Essential

  • Professional knowledge acquired through a professional qualification which enables registration with a health care regulating body.
  • Supplemented by significant post-registration experience and specialist knowledge of the clinical area.
  • Management skills gained through theory and / or significant practice experience
  • Leadership skills
  • IT literate
  • Standard keyboard skills
  • Good understanding of the trust ACP strategy and policy

  • Additional teaching qualification/ experience


Experience

Essential

  • Extensive clinical experience in speciality
  • Has led audit and research within the service
  • Can refer independently to other members of the MDT
  • Works within a supervision framework for ACP

  • In a role within the service which directly feeds into an ACP role - for example a trainee ACP


Qualifications Band 7

Essential

  • Registered healthcare practitioner
  • Successfully completed modules/ short courses which are relevant to their role and are equivalent to master's level (L7) Supplemented by post graduate specialist training which may have been delivered in house.
  • Portfolio demonstrating continued professional development
  • ILS/ALS provider (appropriate to role/setting or dependent on clinical area)
  • Ability and drive to complete the MSc in advanced clinical practice successfully and attain the full ACP MSc qualification
  • Independent Non-medical prescriber or willing to undertake (if legally permitted)
  • Will work towards and complete any appropriate credential routes which are available and applicable to the clinical area
