The communications team at University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust (UHDB) are looking for an experienced strategic thinker and enthusiastic communications professional to join the communications senior leadership team.

The Trust is a large, multi-site organisation with 14,500 staff who deliver exceptional care to a population of over one million people, provide education and training to the future NHS workforce and conduct ground-breaking research to drive better health outcomes.

The post holder will have excellent news judgement, working strategically to tell the story of one of the largest hospital providers in the country, adapting content to engage communities across our various platforms and media outlets.

The role is fast paced, and the post holder must be able to make decisions quickly and confidently and be a collaborator, working regularly with members of the team, organisation, and executive team.

This role is part of the communications leadership team and will have line management responsibilities. While the main responsibilities focus on external communications and media, the role will also be responsible for internal communications, campaign development and delivery, digital content, events, stakeholder advice and support.

Main duties of the job

In this role you'll provide dedicated communications support to UHDB, based largely at Royal Derby Hospital, working across all functions including media, digital communications, internal communications and branding to help deliver the team's communications plans and ambitions.

You will be managed by the head of communications and work closely with the hospital's executive team too.

Person Specification

Experience

Essential

  • Significant experience in the field of communications, to masters level or equivalent worked experience.
  • Significant experience in a large, complex organisation using a wide range of media management skills
  • Proven track record of developing and implementing effective communications plans and tracking and managing project delivery activity
  • Partnership working - building effective partnerships with different groups (internal & external) and partner agencies/organisations
  • Extensive experience of how the media works and demonstrable experience of media and external relations, internal communications and new media
  • Ability to use initiative
  • Ability to plan a broad range of complex activities - organising, project managing communications, campaigns and events
  • Demonstrate an ability to prioritise own workload and recognise, prioritise and respond appropriately to urgent and emergency situations
  • Experience of working to tight deadlines


Qualifications

Essential

  • Educated to degree level in field of public relations, communications or marketing or equivalent.
  • Ability to translate complex information into Plain English and deliver appropriately to key audiences
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and confidence in dealing with people
