To be the Ophthalmic imaging manager for the REI. Responsible to manage the ophthalmic imaging service to provide high-quality diagnostic imaging services for the region. To use advanced specialist knowledge develop imaging service, providing continuous quality enhancement and advise on all aspects of imaging service improvement.

To manage X2 ophthalmic image databases and their integration with trust EPR systems.

To develop imaging protocols & procedures and teach staff clinical imaging & fluorescein angiography of patients to be used for diagnosis, record purposes, teaching, research and publication.

To work independently as an experienced Ophthalmic imager and own initiative to performing imaging and supporting junior team members.

***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as 'Priority' and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification***

Main duties of the job

Workforce approximately 14 WTE Ophthalmic imaging staff

The post-holder is responsible for managing £1.1 million of ophthalmic photography/imaging equipment and X2 ophthalmic image databases.

Approximately 60K patient imaging events performed annually on approximately 30K patients.

PRIMARY DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Freedom to Act

Manage imaging service

Administrative & day to day management of ophthalmic imaging staff.

Implement & manage a trainee ophthalmic imaging programme.

Advise management on aspects of service development in relation to imaging.

Manage ophthalmic imaging equipment to ensure functionality and organise maintenance & service visits

Assist with general ophthalmology IT systems management.

Initiate and lead specific ophthalmology projects as required.

To work as an advanced photographer in the community/ hospital setting (as appropriate) without immediate supervision.

Work within codes of practice, professional guidelines, broad occupational policies and organisational standards of practice.

Be professionally accountable for all aspects of your own work, while recognizing own limitations and refers to medical or non-medical staff when required.

Communication/Relationship Skills

Communicate effectively with all members of the multi-disciplinary team, including ophthalmologists, orthoptists, nurses, optometrists and other professional groups within the ophthalmic department.

Independently participate in presenting ophthalmic imaging to the consultant, medical and practitioner multi- disciplinary team.

Communicate effectively and sensitively with patients of all ages, ethnicity and learning abilities, gaining consent and giving instruction and explanation of tests to ensure optimum imaging results are obtained.

Analytical/Judgemental Skills

Ability to make effective decisions in critical situations or during busy clinics, evaluate and prioritise workload.

Ability to personalise the diagnostic tests to the patient and the individual circumstances.

Analyse and interpret quality of clinical images.

Planning/Organisational Skills

Work closely with the line-manager and other service leads to ensure the service remains effective and safe and facilitate service improvement and development.

Provide a smooth-running, high-quality imaging service to support to the multidisciplinary team.

Champion quality initiatives that improve the patient experience and enhance the interface between staff, patients and visitors via systems of audit.

Patient/Client Care

Perform highly specialist tests using specialist ophthalmology equipment.

Moving, handling and assisting patients to position at the imaging equipment to obtain maximum quality of images.

Accurately and independently performs visual acuity using LogMAR, Optical coherence tomography and highly specialist tests such as fundus fluorescein angiography, digital anterior segment and retinal imaging including ultra-widefield fundus photography.

Policy/Service Development

Develop & implement policy and service changes for the ophthalmic imaging department to keep the service up to date and of high quality.

Conduct audits of the service at regular intervals.

Network with other imaging departments.

Advise the Head Optometrist and REI service line manager on the purchasing of imaging equipment and policy changes to meet developing needs of the department.

Staff Management

Undertake the full range of HR duties for the imaging team including appraisal, disciplinary, grievance, sickness absence management and staff support.

Provide training to other members of the ophthalmology multi-disciplinary team in relation to the uses of ophthalmic imaging.

Deliver teaching to trainee practitioners in imaging interpretation within Ophthalmology.

Provide clear instructions and accurate information to other team members when training, taking care to monitor and evaluate their work fairly to ensure standards are maintained and implemented effectively in line with unit protocols and competencies.

Information Resources

Manage two ophthalmic photography image databases (Forum & Optos). This involves maintaining data-protection compliance, organising software & system updates.

Advise on ophthalmology IT systems

Finance and Resource Management

Responsible for security and arranging servicing, maintenance and repair of ophthalmic photography/imaging instruments and computer equipment at regular intervals.

Research and Development

Advise on the setup of clinical trials Participate in research and clinical trials.

Conduct audits to evaluate the imaging quality of the virtual pathways.

Physical Skills

Dexterity and accuracy required in performing diagnostic tests.

Setting up the imaging equipment for each individual patients needs, including complex requirements.

Ability to travel to community hospital locations to meet the requirements of the post

Mental Effort

Frequent episodes of concentration during allocated clinics, while also managing the service.

Emotional Effort

Caring for patients who have sight loss and/or sight threatening conditions can be emotionally demanding.

Working Conditions

If necessary, the post holder will be expected to be able to deescalate or deal with sensitive issues or verbal aggression.

Large department with high volume of patients.

Being in vicinity of bodily fluids, for example tears and blood.

Person Specification

KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE

Essential

  • Ability to lead other clinical staff & junior staff
  • Demonstrable relevant experience at Band 5 or above and equivalent extensive experience in Ophthalmology imaging


QUALIFICATIONS

Essential

  • First level degree in related subject or equivalent evidence of clinical ability and experience


Desirable

  • Registered with relevant governing body (Institute of Medical Illustrator, Academy for Healthcare Science - Ophthalmic and vision science)
  • Recognised teaching qualification
