The role requires the post holder to support and work in collaboration with the Deputy Lead Nurse Infection Prevention and Control, the infection prevention and control team, and teams across the organisation and with external stakeholders to meet the Trust Infection Prevention and Control requirements within national and local frameworks.

Under the guidance of the Deputy Lead Nurse Infection Prevention and Control the post holder, will offer clinical and managerial leadership to the team. The post holder will also provide visible leadership to extended membership of the infection prevention and control service to ensure there is good clinical engagement and involvement to deliver the key objectives of the Trust.

The post holder will practice at an advanced level, demonstrating a high level of autonomy, leadership and clinical decision making.

As a member of the corporate nursing team, the post holder will act as a professional role model to all nurses and midwives and will take corrective action to uphold the standards required of the Trust and the profession. This will include participating in service specific and senior nurse shift arrangements to provide professional advice and leadership during evenings, weekends and bank holidays.

Main duties of the job

  • Prompt identification of infection and potential infection hazards
  • Advise/communicate effectively with all healthcare staff, patients and public.
  • Liaise with wards, departments, health centre premises and areas within sphere of responsibility to monitor the implementation of and compliance with the infection-control policies
  • Act as liaison between the laboratory, medical and nursing staff to ensure the instigation of the appropriate management of infection control
  • Participate in/provide infection control services to external organisations where appropriate
  • Work with other members of the Infection Control Team and with the Health Protection Team
  • Promote the use of evidence based practice in the development of policies and procedures
  • Formulate/write/update infection control policies and procedures and discuss with the Infection Control Team and relevant personnel
  • Prompt identification, investigation and control of outbreaks of infection
  • Take part in relevant evaluation trials of new techniques, products and equipment relating to infection control
  • In collaboration with Infection Control Team members carry out risk assessments, with consideration to local circumstances and communicate actions required by Clinical Staff for safe Infection Control Practice

Job responsibilities

1. Demonstrating an advanced level of knowledge of infection prevention and control and the ability to apply this to clinical practice.

2. Intervene and provide expert advice in complex or urgent situations in relation to infection prevention and control

3. Provide clinical leadership across all Trust sites anticipating and identify key strategic issues and priorities facing the speciality

4. Work closely with staff and patients to support adherence to infection prevention and control policies and interventions

5. Initiate timely and appropriate consultation and / or referral when a problem exceeds scope of practice or expertise

6. Work with clinicians and senior managers within the Trust and multi-agency colleagues.

7. Support service / pathway redesign within the specialist area ensuring delivery of a quality service

8. Provide clinical and professional leadership, expertise and advice in specialist area at an advance level to healthcare professionals, service users and key stakeholders.

9. Support the development and monitoring of the annual infection prevention and control work plan

10. Support the development and monitoring of the Trust surveillance programmes to include mandatory, targeted and alert organism surveillance. Support the Lead Nurse to ensure findings are feedback to clinicians and service improvements identified and positively addressed.

11. Support the formulation of written, evidence based and referenced infection prevention and control guidance/ policies and monitoring of practices through the corporate and divisional annual audit programme.

12. Support the infection prevention and control audit programme, ensuring necessary actions are taken with feedback to managers and clinical teams.

13. Support the delivery of best practice Infection Prevention and Control delivery of KPIs associated with external Service Level Agreements (SLAs), Care homes, and GP Practices for North Derbyshire

14. Support the adaptation and delivery of education programmes in line with changes in Legislation, Guidance and local surveillance activity.

Person Specification

Application and Interview

Essential

  • - Level one Registered Nurse
  • - Degree or Diploma in Infection Control
  • - ENB 997/8 or equivalent teaching qualification
  • - Evidence of brad nursing experience
  • - Evidence of IPC Nursing at Band 6
  • - Evidence of Leadership and Change Management
  • - Experience in designing, delivering and evaluating training programmes for a variety of clinical staff
  • - Experience of managing own workload with excellent time management skills
  • - Proven advanced clinical knowledge and skills in relation to Infection Control
  • - Excellent presentation, communication and interpersonal skills
  • - Ability to manage complex clinical and operational situations in relation to infection control, which involve staff from all levels within an organisation
  • - Developed interpersonal and influencing skills
  • - Ability to lead and motivate staff on Infection Control issues
  • - Developed skills in the audit and incident investigation processes
  • - Specialist knowledge of strategies, directives and developments pertinent to Infection Control
  • - Able to identify risks, potential risks and advise on solutions to mitigate these risks
  • - A positive and flexible style and approach, Excellent team working skills, Demonstrates honesty and integrity and promotes Trust values, Car driver
  • - IPC Certificate


Desirable

  • - MSc in relevant subject
  • - Already leading or working within an Infection Control Team
  • - An understanding of organisational management issues
