We have a rare and exciting opportunity for a specialty doctor to join our multi-disciplinary team, providing the highest levels of care to our patients alongside colleagues from a range of disciplines ensuring that the patient is at the centre of everything we do.

Wathwood Hospital is a purpose-built 78 bedded medium secure service, opened in 1996. The hospital provides care to male patients with a primary diagnosis of mental illness who require treatment under the Mental Health Act in conditions of medium security. The service is jointly commissioned by care provider collaboratives for East Midlands and South Yorkshire.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be allocated to one of the Consultant Teams and will be expected to take responsibility for part or all of the relevant inpatient case load (up to 22 patients).

The post holder will be expected to have the below necessary qualifications and skillsets:
  • Full GMC Registration
  • Section 12 Approval
  • Experience of MDT working, Risk Assessment and CPAs, working with mentally disordered offenders in forensic psychiatric settings
  • The ability to self direct, be a team player, get involved in clinical audit and prioritise workload
  • Have excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Have an open and flexible work attitude
  • Be punctual, reliable and have good time management skills
  • The ability to undertake any necessary travel in connection with duties of the post
  • The ability to work in a challenging environment
  • Work well under pressure and to deadlines


About us

Wathwood Hospital is a purpose-built 78 bedded medium secure service, opened in 1996. The hospital provides care to male patients with a primary diagnosis of mental illness who require treatment under the Mental Health Act in conditions of medium security.

There are three wards in the main hospital and for more advanced rehabilitation we have The Lodges. The three main hospital wards are named after their functions: Assessment and Intensive Care, Continuing Care, and Rehabilitation. All patients have their own bedrooms. There are extensive therapeutic facilities, including:
  • A variety of group rooms
  • A large Central Activities area
  • Patients' library
  • Patients' shop
  • Sports hall
  • Gymnasium
  • Swimming pool
  • Craft workshop
  • Music studio
  • Primary Care Suite
  • Education Suite

There are extensive horticultural facilities, both within the secure area and in the hospital grounds beyond the secure perimeter. The hospital has a farm shop and runs a caf, both sometimes open to the public.

The service currently has five Consultant Forensic Psychiatrists, establishment for four Specialty Doctors and for four Psychiatric Trainees. We also have a full PrimaryHealthcare Service, with clinics run by a localGP, Dr Sukumar.

Job description
Job responsibilities

Main duties will include:
  • Weekly psychiatric assessments or reviews of their inpatient caseload (or more often according to clinical need).
  • First medical response to psychiatric emergencies and medical seclusion reviews.
  • Attendance at multi-disciplinary ward rounds and CPA meetings.
  • Preparation of reports for Mental Health Tribunals, Managers Hearings, CPAs and the Ministry of Justice. Referral letters and correspondence to external agencies and preparation of discharge documentation.
  • Management of physical healthcare consequences of psychotropic medication and occasional assessment or management of other physical health presentations when the primary care service is unavailable or in response to an emergency during working hours.
  • Prospective cover of trainees or career grade doctor colleagues across or within consultant teams to cover annual leave, study leave, carers leave or sick leave.
  • Participation in a non-residential first on call rota, 1 in 20.
  • According to level of experience and competency the post holders may be required to undertake gatekeeping assessments or medico-legal reports under consultant supervision, chair multi-disciplinary meetings, and give evidence to Mental Health Tribunals or Managers Hearings.
  • The post holder will be expected to work collaboratively with the trainees attached to the service, providing cross-cover, supervision and guidance.
  • They will be expected to participate in clinical audit and the academic training programme.

Qualifications
Essential
  • Full registration with the UK General Medical Council with a licence to practise
  • Section 12 (2) approval

Desirable
  • 3 year's clinical experience in the psychiatry.
  • Part 1 MRCPsych or equivalent qualification.

Experience
